Job overview
This is a fantastic strategic role opportunity, working across the city of Leeds to provide support to improve health inequalities for a person with a Learning Disability. The work we undertake is both in person and via the supportive framework of our website “Get Checked Out Leeds” which receives around 20,000 visitors per year. We provide in person and online training to other health professionals, social care organisations, Universities and families and carers to ensure that there is a positive understanding of the health inequalities that people with a Learning Disability experience to ensure that we can advocate and improve the health care offer and reduce early mortality statistics.
Main duties of the job
The candidate will be expected to use their specialist knowledge of the problems and difficulties experienced by people with learning disabilities which underlie the additional health needs associated with this group of people to make positive changes that negate these risks to people with a Learning Disability.
Use your specialist knowledge of the adjustments required by mainstream health care services to meet the health needs of this group of people and how to support those services to deliver appropriate measures to meet the needs. This could include developing pathways and policies to increase access to the benefit of providing reasonable adjustments.
Use your knowledge of current policy developments and legislation that support people with a Learning Disability. Examples are Mental Capacity Act, The Equality Act (Reasonable adjustments), Accessible Information Standard etc.
You will have good communication skills, which enable the development of a trusted brand, service and relationships with services and service users who often experience significant barriers with communication.
You will have the ability to use and adapt a wide variety of communication techniques and skills which supports others to improve their knowledge and communication to facilitate better working with a person with a Learning Disability.
You will be able to lead and manage projects that are allocated to you.

The Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (LYPFT) is the main provider of Mental Health and Learning Disability services in Leeds. We also provide specialist inpatient services in York and some highly specialised services across the country. Detailed job description and main responsibilities
You will be a registered health professional with experience in the field of and working with people with a learning disability.
You will have experience in self-directed management of your work load. This is a band 6 role and you should be able to be autonomous in your role to manage. Supervision and support is available to help you to manage this and we have regular supervision and annual personal development meetings that can help you to develop these skills further.
Demonstrate sound, evidence-based health/clinical expertise to initiate direct and indirect care work of learning disability service users’ health needs.
Demonstrates experience of evidence-based practice with specific client groups, including autistic spectrum, dementia, challenging behaviour, communication problems, and clients with sensory needs.
Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills, written communication and high standards of record keeping. Can use computer software to support record keeping and communication.
Create, lead and deliver specific training package(s) internally/externally to the Trust.
Working hours to be normal office hours 9am – 5pm but variable working arrangements over 7 day week may be necessary on occasions to complete ongoing client work, attend events to fit in with the needs of the service.

- At least 3 – 5 years post qualification/experience working within a Learning Disability field.
Knowledge

- Knowldege around the subject of health care for people with a Learning Disability. Working knowledge of the application of the NMC code of conduct. Knowledge and experience legislation that promotes and supports the inclusion of people with a Learning Disability. Knowledge of the local network and national drivers for Health care for people with a Learning Disability.
