Job overview

The Royal Surrey County Hospital Emergency Department sees approximately 75000 patients every year. To support and enhance the care we provide to patients we are looking to recruit a dynamic and enthusiastic registered paediatric nurse to join our team.

This is an exciting time to join the Emergency Department as we have recently undergone a rebuild to enhance the patient’s journey through the department.  We have introduced dynamic patient pathways to improve patient flow and experience that has resulted in the vast improvement of the department’s performance. 
Our Paediatric Emergency Department is driven by a motivated, energetic, and highly skilled nursing team, committed to delivering the highest standards of evidence-based emergency nursing care. We are deeply passionate about Emergency Nursing and proud of the vital service we provide to our local community.

This diverse role presents an exciting opportunity for an exceptional nurse. Responsibilities will include teaching and facilitation, and overseeing nursing recruitment and induction for nurses new to the Paediatric Emergency Department. You should have considerable experience within Emergency Paediatric nursing and have excellent leadership and communication skills.

Main duties of the job

To be responsible for developing and coordinating education initiatives within Paediatric Emergency Department and to take continuing responsibility with the Matron/Lead Nurse for in-service development of all the Emergency Floor nursing team.

To provide leadership and motivation to establish clinical practices, which is research/evidence-based and lead to standard setting and regular audit in line with the Trust’s commitment to Clinical Governance.

To monitor and review clinical and professional standards of care with the ward sister and action on areas which require education.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will support the ‘professional development ‘of all Paediatric nursing staff within the Emergency Department identifying and delivering sustainable educational programme which will improve the delivery of patient focus services amongst nursing staff and student nurses.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse / Healthcare Professional
  • Experience in the Paediatric Emergency Department setting at a senior level and/or in practice development
  • Demonstrates professional updating of knowledge in past one/two years
  • Mentorship / Practice Assessor / Teaching Qualification
  • Degree or working towards
  • ILS / PILS / TILS / EPALS
Desirable criteria
  • ALS / ATNC / APLS

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Proven clinical skills in Emergency Nursing
  • Demonstrates a genuine interest and has an awareness in the Emergency Nursing agenda
  • Evidence of advanced skills in practice i.e. iv additives, cannulation, phlebotomy, plastering, suturing
  • Knowledge of clinical governance issues such as complaints handling, clinical risk management
  • Knowledge of current NHS and Professional issues
  • Evidence of achievements in practice development and quality improvement projects
