We are excited to welcome a passionate and driven Band 6 Nurse to join our dynamic Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) team at St Mary’s Hospital, part of the West London Children’s Healthcare collaboration.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a committed nursing professional who thrives in high-acuity settings and wants to make a real difference in the lives of critically ill children and their families.

As a Band 6 Nurse in our specialist PICU, you will provide high-quality, evidence-based care to infants, children, and young people with complex and life-threatening conditions.

You’ll play a key role in the delivery of safe, compassionate care while also acting as a clinical leader, supporting junior staff, coordinating care pathways, and contributing to the smooth, effective running of the unit.

Main duties of the job

  • Deliver safe, compassionate, and individualised care to critically ill paediatric patients.
  • Monitor and manage life-support equipment such as ventilators, infusions, and central lines.
  • Undertake advanced clinical procedures such as tracheostomy care, non-invasive ventilation, and emergency interventions.
  • Interpret clinical data to identify deterioration and respond appropriately.
  • Administer medications safely, including controlled drugs and emergency medications.
  • Act as a clinical role model and mentor for Band 5 nurses, student nurses, and support staff.
  • Support the coordination and allocation of care on a shift basis in collaboration with the shift leader.
  • Contribute to staff development through teaching, coaching, and feedback.
  • Participate in the induction and competency development of new staff.
  • Communicate sensitively with children, families, and carers during distressing and challenging situations.

Education

Essential criteria
  • RSCN/RN (CHILD) post registration relevant accredited course (PICU/ AICU)
  • 6 Months Post completion of PICU/AICU Course.
  • Experience of supervision of junior staff and students
  • Excellent level of English language demonstrated through effective written and verbal communication skills.
Desirable criteria
  • Degree

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum 2 years at pay Band 5 within Paediatric Intensive Care Environment
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of change management – positive change agent

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to demonstrate specialist knowledge of a critically ill child nursed on the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit inclusive of knowledge of mechanical ventilation and hemofiltration
  • Knowledge of research and audit.
  • Ability to practice within the scope of the NMC Code of Professional Conduct
  • Competent interpersonal skills
