Job overview

This is an exciting vacancy within East and West Psychological Medicine Services across the two sites of Wexham Park Hospital in Slough, and Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading. We are looking for an experienced clinical practitioner from a mental health background in either nursing, social work or equivalent profession who is keen to support in the development of each team in their clinical practice.  

Through strong clinical and evidence-based practice, the Practice Development Clinician will lead and support the promotion of excellence across both Psychological Medicine Services to develop the teams in ensuring that the patient experience and clinical records are of the highest quality. This will be achieved through coordinating governance activities, partnership working, teaching, coaching, supervision, high visibility, and surveillance. The post holder will be expected to work in clinical practice and develop training initiatives across teams as well as offering specialist knowledge and skills in the clinical area. 

The post holder will be joining a well-established team working with all adults over 18 years old who are referred from the Emergency Department or the wards at Wexham Park Hospital and Royal Berkshire Hospital. The post holder will develop strong working relationships with our key stakeholders at Wexham Park Hospital and Royal Berkshire Hospital as well as across mental health services. Working hours will be 37.5 per week, Monday to Friday 9am until 5pm. 

Main duties of the job

The post holder will lead work across professional and service boundaries using creative reasoning and problem-solving. 

Support and manage clinical and operational development and change 

Lead on patient and carer experience and engagement initiatives to drive improvement, innovation and change. 

Lead the development of robust professional, best practice standards of documentation in risk assessments, risk management plans and Safety planning, working across boundaries to support complex presentations and communication excellence. 

To lead on the development and delivery of training  

To embed within the Teams, the use of appropriate evidence based therapeutic intervention in addressing the physical and mental health needs of service users and their families. 

Develop and maintain an internal audit programme. 

Provide feedback and learning regarding clinical incidents. 

Act as a role model demonstrating high standards and expert knowledge of care, excellent advanced communication skills and expertise and providing clinical leadership to others.

Education/Qualifications/Training

Essential criteria
  • RMN or equivalent Professional Qualification
  • Master’s Degree in relevant subject, specialist training, Professional Qualification or equivalent experience

Continuous Professional Development

Essential criteria
  • Student mentorship
  • Evidence of current and relevant on-going professional development
Desirable criteria
  • Completion of relevant post graduate courses related to the specialism eg NMP, dual diagnosis, psychosocial interventions, Professional nurse advocate
  • Other specialist practitioner role

Previous Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working as Band 6 grade in mental health services
  • Demonstrable Involvement in service development projects and policy reviews
  • Supervision of others
  • Evidence of involvement in quality improvement projects
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in urgent care
  • Support and empowerment of carers

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Advanced assessment and clinical reasoning skills
  • Skilled in identifying and differentiating between a wide range of diagnoses
  • Confident to recommend to non mental health staff treatment approaches and/or medication for a patient’s psychological needs
  • Awareness of National and local policy regarding mental health urgent care
  • Time management and identifying priorities
  • Risk assessment and management skills
  • Experience of conducting staff supervision/appraisals
  • Good IT skills
  • Able to work unsocial hours
  • Ability to travel efficiently in line with the service needs
Desirable criteria
  • Thorough knowledge of the network of support services for patients and carers, and the means of accessing them
  • Teaching and facilitating group work
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Mental Health Legislation
  • Experience of conducting audit/research
  • Excellent presentation skills
