Job overview
The maternal medicine midwife will provide specialist, high quality, effective midwifery care to women and birthing people with complex medical conditions during the antenatal period. The post holder will work both autonomously and collaboratively within the maternal medicine team to promote safe individualised care.
The post holder will work alongside the maternal medicine team to provide a safe, efficient and quality driven service and along with the Band 7 team leader be a key point of contact for women.
The role will involve coordinating care pathways, ensure these are documented in notes and liaise with the appropriate medical or midwifery team.
The band 6 midwife will also be responsible for attending clinical rounds with the obstetric medical team and reviewing midwifery care on those women/birthing people who are being managed out with maternity.
The midwife will contribute to service development and ensure care is delivered in line with national and local polices and professional standards. It will be expected that the role will be shared to support diabetic team on agreed days with Matron and Band 7 maternal medicine midwife
Main duties of the job
- The midwife is responsible and accountable for his/her own midwifery practice.
- To work in partnership with women/birthing people and their families, GP, obstetrician and other agencies to ensure optimum care.
- Assess, plan, implement and evaluate the care of mothers and babies in accordance with the Trust’s policies and guidelines.
- Strive for continuity of care and informed client choice within the limitations of the service.
- Facilitate the learning of midwifery skills through supervision, teaching and support.
- Actively promote and encourage a healthy lifestyle, advising and arranging support for women as required.
- Participate in parent information groups, facilitating preparation for childbirth and the postnatal period.

Education
Essential criteria
- Midwifery degree or equivalent
- Mentorship or full SSSA preparation
- Registered Midwife (on NMC register)
Desirable criteria
- NIPE/EON
- HDU experience
- Maternal medicine course
Experience
Essential criteria
- Completed 2 year post registration clinical experience working as an RM in the UK
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working with pregnant women with complex medical/social needs
- Experience of working with pregnant women who have experienced pregnancy/neonatal loss
- Community midwifery experience
- Experience in diabetes in pregnancy
Skills
Essential criteria
- Able to manage difficult situations effectively
- Knowledge of obstetric emergency skills and drills and the ability to perform in an emergency situation
- Understanding and knowledge of fetal monitoring
- Demonstrate the ability to compile complex written information
Desirable criteria
- Involvement in quality improvement projects
- FSRH letter of competency for contraceptive implant insertion
- Worked as shift leader
