To promote high standards of specialist care for patients with suspected cancer ensuring a quality experience.
To establish effective working relationships throughout the NSS, CUP/MUO, team and services.
To work autonomously to support patients with suspected cancer facilitating necessary investigations and providing clinical engagement, providing advice and support.
Manage a case load of patients who are under the NSS, CUP/MUO service. 
Undertakes the role of key worker for the NSS patients and the MUO/CUP cancer patients. 
Facilitate the co-ordination of patients through the MDT.
Attend and present at weekly MDT’s.
Holistically assess patients at key areas of their journey. 
Sign post patients/carers/families to relevant support agencies.
The CNS will be responsible for ordering, assessing and interpreting diagnostic investigations within Trust policy and agreed pathways, using their knowledge and skills to interpret results and implement care accordingly. Recognises own limitations and refers on to other specialised agencies when appropriate.
Explains test results and consequences to patients, carers and staff and ensures their understanding by careful and sensitive questioning.   
To be a resource both within the trust and the community for clinical advice and information.
In liaison with the Practice Development team to support the professional development of students.
With the Lead Cancer Nurse contribute to clinical governance within the trust for cancer patients.
To deliver care in line with National and Alliance guidance and requirements 
Provide nursing care through the provision of patient focused service, working autonomously.
Triage referrals via the electronic referral system in line with the NSS referral guidelines.
Deliver clinical care and management in line with local and national guidance and best practice.
Put quality at the heart of practice by delivering evidence based individualised and personalised care through assessment; planning and evaluation of all care interventions.
Facilitate and support patient’s management, diagnosis and referral to specialist teams.
Discuss investigations and treatment for cancer with sensitivity, knowledge and expertise. 
Demonstrate excellent communication skills.  
Act as patient advocate when appropriate and respect patient confidentiality and privacy with respect for diverse cultural backgrounds and requirements.
Assess people’s information needs and provide relevant information to meet those needs. Enable people to access, identify, appraise and interpret information to determine their own future.
Initiate and promote collaborative working relationships and effective communication between all members of the MDT to improve the management and outcomes of patients within the specialist areas.
To provide specialist and advanced/expert advice and support to multi-professional teams to improve care and support for patients with cancer.
With support acts as an expert practitioner within the multi-disciplinary team, providing specialist nursing knowledge, co-ordinating specialised patient care and effectively communicating any changes in condition/treatment.
Demonstrate advanced nursing practice in assessment planning, implementation and evaluation of care and management of patients with cancer.
Provides empathy and reassurance through the quality of life issues that are associated with living with their disease and lifelong condition. 
To plan, deliver and evaluate programmes to address patients’ complex health needs.
To be responsible for leading and managing a clinical case load for patients.
To be a non-medical prescriber if required and determined by service need.
Act as a role model and clinical expert within the trust and externally through the demonstration of advanced knowledge, skills and evidence based practice.
Maintain accurate records of all referred patients, ensuring relevant information and outcomes are documented in the patient’s notes in accordance with the trust policy and professional standards.
Provide ongoing care and support for patients with multi-faceted/complex problems though one to one consultations as designated nurse – led support.
Using the principles of health promotion and preventative strategies to provide education about healthy lifestyles for patients, carers, staff and the general public as appropriate.
Ensure user involvement through the use of surveys, audit and attendance at relevant meetings.
Promote the service and clinical excellence by publishing and presenting innovations, audit and research locally and nationally.
To liaise and co-ordinate with primary care, Trust colleagues, diagnostic services and the patient to ensure appropriate tests are completed and results are available prior to first clinical vetting/ assessment.
Work closely with the administrative services (including booking team), diagnostic services and clinical team to ensure next actions are regularly updated and completed.
To act as professional supervisor and utilise clinical supervision and reflective practice skills to enhance development of self and colleagues in the inter-professional team to optimise care.
To act as a mentor for students and other junior staff ensuring learning that is commensurate with education needs.
To participate in nursing training and updates.

To provide patients and their carers with information and advice, ensuring the best level of understanding as appropriate.
Develop written and other health information for patients with regards to disease, treatment, management and ongoing care, specific to the NSS, CUP/MUO/ cancer pathway.
To participate in education programmes within the trust and local higher education providers as appropriate.
To contribute to an annual training needs analysis to identify education and training needs of staff in order to improve patients care.
To keep informed and update staff on developments in advanced/expert practice.
To support the cancer nursing team as required.

To seek opportunities to develop advanced/specialist nurse expertise in order to develop service and other skills.

Be actively involved in the health promotion, education and identification of patients’ needs, taking into consideration biological, behavioural, sociological and environmental factors.

Actively supports patients and their families, through communicating difficult and complex information using appropriate and individualised methods to ensure effective understanding, empowering them to make an informed decision about their care options. 
Continually update and maintain own professional development in cancer through attendance at meetings/study days and through the utilisation of appropriate educational and study resources.
Disseminate findings from own professional development through the use of written reports, presentation and the implementation of educational initiatives.
Facilitate communication between primary, secondary and tertiary care providers across local Cancer services in the Surrey, Sussex Cancer Alliance. To be responsible for the development of evidence based protocols, policies and clinical guidelines for and evaluate impact these policies and protocols have on service delivery.
Provides specialist advice and care with support and has the ability to work as an autonomous practitioner.
