Job overview

We are looking for an experience Haematology/ or Oncology Nurse who can demonstrate specialist skills and can support children and families in a Day Care Unit and Outpatients setting. The postholder must be flexible in working and will seek opportunities in supporting our inpatient and Clinical Nurse Specialist Teams.

This post is based at West London Children’s Healthcare WLCH at the St Mary’s Hospital site, which is situated in the heart of Paddington, West London. This means we are easy accessible to major transport routes and this prime location will allow you to visit the all the capital has to offer.

Main duties of the job

  • Deliver individualised care using nursing assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation in partnership with the Multi-Disciplinary Team.
  • Demonstrate expert competence in Central Venous Line Safety, incl. Hickman Lines, Portacaths and Blood Transfusions, Chemotherapy, etc
  • Take charge of the clinical area as required, ensuring safe staffing levels and appropriate skill mix.
  • Maintain accurate nursing documentation in accordance with Trust policy.
  • Provide psychological and emotional support to children and families, respecting cultural and individual needs.
  • Ensure the clinical environment is safe, clean and conducive to the physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing of patients and staff.
  • Delegate tasks safely and effectively to the wider team.
  • Report and support investigation of incidents, accidents and complaints.
  • Actively contribute to safe discharge planning, liaising effectively with internal and external teams.

Person specification

Education

Essential criteria
  • RN/ RSCN / RN (Child)
  • Post Grad Course in the Speciality or Equivalent, e.g. HDU
  • Chemotherapy Competent
  • Experience supervising junior staff; mentorship in practice or equivalent
  • SSSA Certificate
Desirable criteria
  • BSc/MSc in Health or Social Care
  • Leadership of Management Qualification or Equivalent

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience at Band 5 within the relevant specialty
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
  • Has recent experience in working in an acute ward
  • Have been involved in QI and change management programme / project
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in change management and acting as a positive change agent
  • Able to teach in a classroom setting

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Specialist knowledge relevant to the patient group (for specialist areas)
  • Need something in here about administering medications
  • Understanding of research and audit
  • Ability to take charge of a ward or part-ward, including delegating and supervising junior staff
Desirable criteria
  • Leadership skills
  • Competency and Venepuncture competence
  • Training (or working towards training) in the safe delivery of chemotherapy
