ED/Research Staff Nurse (Joint role)

Band 5

Job overview

We have two exciting opportunities for experienced Emergency Department nurses to join UHS in innovative Band 5 joint ED/Research roles.

Please see below for detailed job description of the role.

Main duties of the job

These posts offer a unique chance to continue delivering high quality emergency care while developing new skills in clinical research, working half of your time within the Emergency Department and half with the Research & Development Trust Wide team.  These roles have been created to strengthen the link between frontline emergency care and high quality research activity, ensuring patients presenting to the ED have improved opportunities to access research that can directly influence their treatment and outcomes. As part of this dual specialty model, you will combine your clinical expertise with research delivery skills to support safe, timely and compassionate care for some of our most acutely unwell patients.

Working for our organisation

University Hospital Southampton is one of England's largest acute teaching Trusts, offering a wide range of learning and development opportunities to support your career aspirations.

Located on the south coast with an international airport and direct rail links to London, Southampton offers an ideal setting to live and work, with the New Forest, South Downs and Jurassic Coast.

We believe that using technology wisely shows strong time management and commitment to innovation. However, personalizing your recruitment application to highlight your unique skills and experiences is crucial. Relying too heavily on generic, AI-generated content instead of drawing from your own strengths and accomplishments may lead to your application being rejected if multiple candidates present identical or similar information.

At UHS we’re committed to providing a flexible working environment where possible. Whether you are balancing family, study, or your wellbeing with your career, we want to support you so you can help our patients.

At UHS, we proudly champion individuality, recognizing that outstanding care is only possible with a diverse, inclusive team. We’re committed to creating an anti-racist, anti-discriminatory environment where everyone feels valued, safe, and empowered to make a meaningful impact in our communities. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences to join us in building a healthcare community where everyone can belong, thrive, and contribute.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

These Band 5 joint posts combine clinical practice in the Emergency Department with the delivery of high quality research to support improved patient outcomes. Key responsibilities include:
•    Deliver safe, compassionate, evidence based nursing care within the ED as part of a multi professional team.
•    Identify, screen, and recruit eligible patients into approved research studies in line with study protocols and governance requirements.
•    Support the completion of study related procedures, documentation, and data collection to ensure research activity is accurate, timely, and compliant.
•    Work collaboratively across ED and Research teams to enable research to be embedded within routine emergency care pathways.

The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate:
•    Minimal 18 months experience working within an NHS Emergency Department.
•    Strong clinical assessment and prioritisation skills suitable for a fast paced, unpredictable setting.
•    Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
•    The ability to work effectively across teams and with patients in acute situations.
•    Good IT skills and the ability to project manage and problem-solve.
•    An interest in clinical research, improvement, and the use of evidence to influence patient care.

In the Emergency Department, you will have a minimal of 18 months experience working in emergency medicine and urgent care and  will continue to provide evidence based nursing care within a fast paced, supportive environment. You will contribute to patient assessment, treatment, and monitoring while working as part of a multi professional team to deliver safe and effective care.

In your research role, you will assist with the identification, screening, and recruitment of eligible patients into clinical studies; support the delivery of study related procedures; and ensure all activity is conducted in line with protocols, regulatory standards, and UHS research governance processes. Your work will contribute to organisational goals around growing research participation, improving equity of access, and embedding research as part of routine care in acute settings. No research experience is required, as full training will be provided, but you must be able to demonstrate a keen interest in research.

You will work closely with both ED staff and the Research team, collaborating with Research Nurses, Principal Investigators, clinicians, and operational colleagues across both areas. These posts report jointly to the ED Senior Nursing Team and the Senior Research Sister for Critical Care & Emergency Research, who will provide structured support, supervision, and ongoing professional development tailored to your needs.
