Job overview

The Cancer Services team at West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking to recruit a part time Clinical Nurse Specialist to join its Lung Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist Team on a fixed term basis for 12 months.

This will be 30 hours per week (4 days per week). We are looking for an experienced and highly motivated individual to support the delivery of high quality, critical patient centred care for patients with a diagnosis of lung cancer or mesothelioma.

Main duties of the job

You will be a core member of the Lung Cancer MDT and provide high quality holistic care, treatment, education, health promotion and well-being to both in patients and out-patients with lung cancer and mesothelioma, whilst supporting their families and carers.  

You will also be an expert resource to other health care professionals offering advice and guidance on the management of lung cancer and the patient pathway.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You will apply a high level of autonomy and demonstrate strong leadership qualities.

You should also possess sound clinical reasoning skills, advanced communication and be able to communicate complex and sensitive information.

You will be well supported and a highly valued member of the team.

Person specification

Education and qualifications

Essential criteria
  • First level RGN registration
  • Teaching qualification eg ENB 998 or extensive experience.
  • Educated to Degree level.
  • Relevant post registration qualifications in oncology / palliative care.
  • Evidence of recent professional development.
Desirable criteria
  • Educated or working towards Masters level.
  • Clinical Examination Module at Level 6/7 or willingness to work towards.
  • Psychological support training at level 2 post Registration.
  • Advanced communication skills training.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Working in the health care sector with staff management experience
  • Up-to-date knowledge of cancer
  • Understanding of the cancer patient and carer issues and their role in service improvement.
  • Knowledge and understanding of The National Cancer Plan, Achieving World Class
  • Cancer outcomes: A Strategy for England 2015-2020.
  • Experience of working across a variety of care settings.
  • Evidence of innovation/change management.
  • Understanding of the Key worker role
  • Sound clinical reasoning skills.
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of commissioning procedures.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of caring for patients with cancer / Oncology/Palliative care needs (post registration experience at Band 6).
  • Teaching/educating of Nurses and patients.
  • Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills with an ability to inspire and motivate teams.
  • Ability to work with multi professional/ cultural organisations, across organisational boundaries.
  • Demonstrates advanced clinical skills in managing complex care situations
  • Wide range of experience in providing multi-disciplinary education within the specialist field.
  • Experience of undertaking and applying research, audit to deliver the clinical governance agenda
  • Practical experience of participating in change / developing practice, project management.
  • IT skills.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of implementing research and audit programmes/ surveys
