Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated individual to train as a Sonographer in the Maternity Ultrasound Department at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. This is an excellent opportunity for someone interested in pursuing a career in ultrasound to receive structured, comprehensive training.

Preferably, you will be an HCPC- or NMC-registered healthcare professional with a background in Imaging (Radiography) or Midwifery. We are also seeking candidates with a strong science background, including completion of science subjects (ideally Physics) at GCSE and A level (or equivalent).

Practical training will be delivered by the Obstetric Ultrasound Department and will cover both Gynaecological and Obstetric ultrasound modules. You will also be required to register with an academic institution to undertake a Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Ultrasound, focusing on gynaecological and obstetric modules. Training will take place across two hospital sites: Queen Charlotte’s & Chelsea Hospital and St Mary’s Hospital.

Please note that this is a Band 7 Annex 21 post, paid at 75% of the Band 7 salary. The job description provided is that of a fully qualified Sonographer. You do not need an existing ultrasound qualification to apply for this role. The full job specification will only apply once you have successfully completed your training and are qualified.

Interviews will be held on the 30th June 2026, should your application be successful.

Main duties of the job

  • As a Trainee Sonographer, you will work under the supervision of experienced clinicians to develop the clinical, technical and communication skills required to independently perform obstetric and gynaecological ultrasound examinations.
  • You will be actively involved in providing high-quality, patient-centred care within a busy maternity ultrasound service, ensuring that every patient is treated with dignity, sensitivity and professionalism.
  • You will learn to undertake a wide range of ultrasound scans, accurately acquire images and measurements, and contribute to clinical decision-making under guidance. The role involves close collaboration with midwives, obstetricians, fetal medicine specialists and administrative teams, requiring strong teamwork, adaptability and excellent communication skills.
  • You will be expected to maintain accurate clinical documentation, follow departmental protocols, uphold safety and infection control standards, and participate in regular teaching, supervision and reflective practice. As part of your development, you will engage with academic learning through a university-accredited Postgraduate Certificate, balancing clinical competencies with academic assignments and assessments. This will include attending university approximately once a month, alongside dedicated self-directed learning on other days.
