An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, patient-focused and motivated Ophthalmic Imaging Technician to join the friendly and supportive team within Lymington Eye Outpatients.
Lymington Eye Outpatients provides a comprehensive ophthalmology outpatient service to patients across the New Forest and surrounding areas, delivering high-quality diagnostic imaging and clinical support across a range of specialist ophthalmic services.
Working as part of our multidisciplinary team, you will undertake a wide range of ophthalmic imaging and diagnostic investigations that support the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of patients with acute and chronic eye conditions. You will work closely with consultants, optometrists, nurses, orthoptists and administrative colleagues to provide an efficient, safe and compassionate service.
The service currently operates Monday to Friday between 08:00 and 18:00. Although based at Lymington New Forest Hospital, there may be occasions where you will be required to support services at Southampton Eye Unit, Southampton General Hospital.

Main duties of the job:
The successful applicant will play an important role in delivering an efficient and high-quality ophthalmic imaging service by:
- Performing specialised ophthalmic imaging and diagnostic investigations.
- Supporting consultant-led outpatient and virtual clinics.
- Producing high-quality diagnostic images suitable for clinical interpretation.
- Delivering compassionate, patient-centred care throughout every stage of the patient’s visit.
- Working collaboratively with the wider multidisciplinary team to ensure smooth clinic flow.
- Contributing to the continued development of the ophthalmology service through innovation, service improvement and quality assurance.

- Colour Fundus Photography
- Humphrey Visual Field Testing
- Ocular Biometry
- Corneal Topography
- Specular Microscopy
- Auto-refraction where appropriate
- Assisting clinicians during laser clinics
- Visual Acuity Assessment
- Intraocular Pressure Measurement
- Instilling dilating eye drops in accordance with Trust policy
- Assisting with the induction and training of new members of staff

Qualifications, knowledge and experience

- Science A Level or equivalent experience
- Experience of working within Ophthalmic imaging or relevant field to Level 4 Diploma equivalent
- A detailed understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the eye and a sound knowledge of ophthalmic conditions
- Detailed knowledge of the Visual pathway and how it relates to visual fields defects in different pathologies
- Competent in the use of Humphrey visual field analyser
- Should be proficient, certificated and confident in the imaging of patient’s Retina, Optic Discs, Corneas using a variety of equipment including, Fundus camera and software programmes for retinal photography.
- Good, clear communication in order to explain tests to patients who may be hard of hearing or where there are barriers to understanding.
- Methodical approach to tasks as intense concentration for long periods of time is required
- Excellent hand/eye dexterity to be able to make fine adjustments to imaging equipment / apparatus
- Work under pressure to achieve defined goals/targets
- Able to assist patients in wheelchairs in confined spaces
- Ability to perform various imagery in dimly lit and dark environments
- Good level of corrected vision to enable the determination of whether an image is clear and sharply focussed

- Management Experience
- The ability to build and maintain good working relationships with hospital staff at all levels.
- Teaching experience
- Experience of using image manipulation and graphics software
