Main duties of the job
In joint collaboration with the Macmillan Lead Nurse for Cancer Services, Lead Chemotherapy Nurse, Consultant Lead and Lead Pharmacist to oversee the strategic development of chemotherapy services, ensuring consultation with key personnel to secure resources to maintain the viability and accreditation of the chemotherapy service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
In joint collaboration with the Macmillan Lead Nurse for Cancer Services, Lead Chemotherapy Nurse, Consultant Lead and Lead Pharmacist to oversee the strategic development of chemotherapy services, ensuring consultation with key personnel to secure resources to maintain the viability and accreditation of the chemotherapy service.
Works in collaboration with the Consultant Lead, and Lead Pharmacist to ensure the preparation of necessary protocols, policies and guidelines, and develop a robust system for review. Ensures the successful delivery of all necessary procedures, protocols, pathways and training are in place consistently and for peer review.
Is directly involved in the care and management of patients receiving chemotherapy and their post treatment follow up, working in partnership with other members of the multidisciplinary team.
Instigate appropriate investigations, diagnostic tests and imaging according to presentation and care pathways. Provide on-going assessment and interpretation of blood parameters, on-going care needs – liaise with other members of the clinical team as necessary.
Provide advice and counselling for patients and their carers - demonstrating proficiency at breaking bad news.
Provide specialised advice to patients on the control of physical and psychological symptoms.
Act as a resource for nursing issues in the training provision and service re-design of the Chemotherapy Service
Work closely with the Lead Chemotherapy Nurse to provide senior nurse leadership to the Haem/Onc team and across the Trust, developing nursing practice based upon clinical expertise and evidence and advising the Macmillan Head of Nursing for Cancer Services regarding strategy and development within services.
Be operationally responsible for the smooth running of the Chemotherapy Day Unit, and provide line management and leadership support for the Chemotherapy Nurses in this area.
Ensure that the Chemotherapy team consists of members who are able to work both autonomously and as part of a wider team, using protocols and guidelines – that they are competent to assess patients’ clinical and psychological needs.
Provide senior nursing leadership to the Chemotherapy Nurses, developing protocol based care to support autonomous working within the Haem/Onc Service.
Network across organisational boundaries and be proactive in establishing appropriate relationships and partnerships to positively influence healthcare delivery within both secondary and primary care.
Take a lead role in developing clinical practice within the Chemotherapy Day Unit and monitor clinical effectiveness through audit and research.
Participate actively and work collaboratively with EOE Cancer Alliance Chemotherapy Nurses Group to ensure equitable care across the Trust and facilitate service development.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse
- Extensive RGN post registration experience
- ENB 998 or equivalent teaching qualification
- Accredited chemotherapy administration course
- Leadership qualification/training
- Education to degree level or evidence of continued professional development
Desirable criteria
- BSC Degree
- Non medical prescriber
Experience
Essential criteria
- Recent oncology experience within the last 6 -12 months
- Recent experience in administration of chemotherapy within the last 6 – 12 months
- Demonstrable achievement in improving patient care, being forward thinking and innovative
