Maternal Medicine Midwife

Job overview

The maternal medicine midwife will provide specialist, high quality, effective midwifery care to women and birthing people with complex medical conditions during the antenatal period. The post holder will work both autonomously and collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to promote safe individualised care.

This role involves coordinating care pathways  and liaising with the appropriate medical or midwifery team across both sites ( Bedford and Luton & Dunstable).

The band 7 midwife will also be responsible for working with the obstetric and medical teams to review midwifery care on those women/birthing people who are being managed outside of maternity.

The successful candidate will contribute to the development of the maternal medicine service across both sites to ensure care is delivered in line with national and local polices and professional standards. 

Main duties of the job

To ensure communication and information sharing systems supports access to high quality consultation between professionals and referral from one level of care to another as appropriate.

 Actively seek opportunities for coproduction with services users with lived experience to develop routine information and advice for women and ensure these are culturally sensitive. Promote service user engagement from those with complex social factors.

Communicate information in a way that makes it relevant and understandable for women and their families.

The post holder is responsible for ensuring accurate and timely records are kept within the Trust Electronic Health Records System, which comply with the Trust policy and relevant professional bodies’ guidance (Nursing and Midwifery Council), reporting on any issues as appropriate. 

The post holder is responsible for ensuring they comply with current good practice informing/updating all members of the multi-disciplinary team, their colleagues, women and appropriate others, of changes in care plans. 

The post holder is responsible for ensuring that they clearly communicate with women, actively listen to establish an understanding of the needs of the service user.

Act as an ambassador for the Trust and develop external networks ensuring continuous development and improvement of internal systems and clinical practice.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Midwife
  • Evidence of postgraduate study relevant to maternal medicine, high risk pregnancy, or advanced midwifery practice.
  • Recognised Teaching Qualification
  • Evidence of Degree or masters qualification or equivalent
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development aligned with the NMC Code and service needs.
Desirable criteria
  • Masters Qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant post registration experience in midwifery, including substantial exposure to high risk antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care.
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary teams, particularly with obstetric physicians, obstetricians, anaesthetists, and specialist nurses.
  • Experience coordinating care for women with complex medical conditions (e.g., cardiac disease, diabetes, autoimmune disorders, renal conditions).
  • Experience in service development, quality improvement, or leading change in clinical practice.
  • Experience supporting junior staff, students, and colleagues through teaching, supervision, and clinical leadership.
Desirable criteria
  • Involvement in audit or publication in maternal medicine
  • Previous experience running specialist maternal medicine clinics

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Advanced understanding of maternal medicine conditions and their impact on pregnancy, birth, and the postnatal period
  • Ability to undertake comprehensive clinical assessments, interpret findings, and escalate appropriately
  • Strong knowledge of national guidelines (e.g., NICE, RCOG, MBRRACE) and ability to apply evidence based practice.
  • Skilled in risk assessment, safety planning, and managing clinical emergencies.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to explain complex medical information sensitively and clearly.
  • Ability to coordinate care pathways and ensure continuity for women with complex needs.
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge and Involvement in regional maternal medicine networks or specialist interest groups
