Job overview

An exciting opportunity exists to join the Skin Team as Band 6 - Support Nurse. We are seeking an enthusiastic, forward thinking and motivated nurse to join this busy service. The nurse will have the opportunity to gain experience and knowledge of skin cancer management in secondary care and develop key CNS skills in an environment supported by an experienced nursing team.

Main duties of the job

To support the current Skin Clinical Nurse Specialist in providing supportive care for patients with skin cancers, their relatives and carers from diagnosis, throughout treatment, survivorship pathways and metastatic disease.

 

·         To provide a holistic, patient-focused service delivering evidence based information and advice to patients with skin cancers, supporting them and their families throughout diagnosis, treatment and ongoing care.

·         To act as ‘key-worker’ and patient advocate within the multi-disciplinary team
co-ordinating individual patients care; promoting continuity through the treatment modalities, and to provide patients with a primary point of contact for information and advice.

·         To provide this specialist clinically based service in liaison with the multi-disciplinary team, supporting the band 7 CNS nurse in developing and monitoring service provision in line with National Guidance and evidence based practice.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1.     Ensure that a high personal profile is maintained with staff and patients and contribute personally to the delivery of direct patient care.

 

2.     Assist in the assessment of the holistic needs assessment of patients and their families and provide the appropriate level of intervention either as direct or indirect care in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team.

 

 

3.     Assess people’s information needs and provide relevant information as appropriate to meet those needs.

 

4.     Work effectively as part of the multi-disciplinary cancer services team to ensure seamless services are provided for patients and their families/ carers

 

5.     To attend and be a core member of skin MDT meeting in accordance the national guidance.

 

6.     Assist with patient and carer communication issues, and coordinate the patient pathway for skin cancer patients referred to the team

 

7.     To manage own workload in collaboration with the Clinical Nurse Specialist across a wide range of specialist activities which includes planning throughout the patient pathway, and directly liaising with other healthcare professionals and agencies.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Registered Nurse (NMC) • Mentorship or teaching qualification Able to evidence recent and continuing Professional Development relevant to cancer care
  • • Degree in related speciality or working towards • Advanced communications skills IRMER Qualified
Desirable criteria
  • • Degree in related speciality or working towards • Advanced communications skills IRMER Qualified

Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Substantial clinical experience within acute hospital setting • Experience of working collaboratively across professions, organisations and services • Experience of teaching staff/ patients/relatives within the working environment • Experience within the speciality of skin cancer and/or oncology
Desirable criteria
  • • Participation in service development and implementation • Experience of managing a patient caseload.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • • Knowledge of professional and NHS issues. • Demonstrates knowledge of oncology, skin cancer and research within the specialist field • Demonstrate knowledge and application of Clinical Governance • Demonstrate knowledge of Clinical audit and research • Knowledge of NHS IT Systems
Desirable criteria
  • • Demonstrate having research in practice
