Job overview

Ideally, you will be an experienced Chemotherapy Nurse who has completed an accredited training in chemotherapy nursing practice and ideally have extensive experience in working within a haematology / oncology or chemotherapy environment.

Main duties of the job

 The Chemotherapy Practitioner Nurse is a cutting-edge role in the field of advanced clinical practice, which crosses professional boundaries, undertaking traditional medical roles and leading inter-professional practice. It is a role model of excellence in the delivery of holistic care to patients. The post holder will demonstrate critical thinking in the safe clinical decision-making process and is required to deliver an advanced level of clinical practice within the field of speciality care. Working within local and nationally agreed protocols and guidelines, demonstrates the knowledge and skills across the Four Pillars of Advanced Practice. With support and supervision the postholder will support service delivery and leadership working alongside colleagues in support of the education and development of nursing staff and medical colleagues.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

As a senior member of the Chemotherapy team, a key element of this role is to participate in service review, setting up new ways of working to support, develop and implement new nurse led clinics in order to ensure new NICE Guidance treatment pathways for oral chemotherapy treatment are in place.
To autonomously assess individual patient needs who are receiving systemic anti-cancer treatment, initiating investigations, determining differential diagnosis and initiating appropriate holistic, evidence based treatment and care and conduct nurse led clinics independently. To provide specialist and advanced clinical skills supporting the medical staff and nursing teams within the oncology department and to participate in the education and development of chemotherapy staff.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • 1st level Registered nurse with valid registration • Educated to degree level. (BSc Hons Nurse Practitioner) or working towards this level. • Member of General Pharmaceutical Council • Independent prescribing qualification (nurse/pharmacist) or willing to undertake • SACT passport
Desirable criteria
  • • Teaching qualification • Evidence of leadership development • Evidence of management development • Advanced communication skills

Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Relevant experience within chemotherapy • Experience of successful multi-agency working • Demonstrable experience in relevant area of practice or equivalent • Experience of teaching and assessing in the clinical area • Experience of developing and undertaking audit. • Participation in service development and implementation of change
Desirable criteria
  • • Management of clinical leadership experience

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • • Knowledge of professional issues and policy relating to specialist area. • Be aware of the nursing and midwifery strategy and promote the development of nursing within the trust. • Be aware of, and act in accordance with the NMC code of professional conduct. • Able to act as clinical supervisor, demonstration of continued learning
