Fantastic opportunities have arisen for a Band 6 Deputy Ward Manager within our Mental Health Healthcare Services here at HMP Birmingham.
HMP Birmingham, which is an Adult Category B prison with a diverse range of nursing needs. HMP Birmingham currently holds a maximum of 980 prisoners, with a combination of both sentenced and remand Adult males. Serving Birmingham Crown and Magistrates courts.
This brings a great opportunity to embrace change and embed culture. The role will be an experience like no other, requiring a diverse mixed nursing skills background and attracts nurses from a range of professional specialist areas, such as Assertive Outreach and Forensic Services.
Our service has defined structured Mental Health Services, that support a stepped care model:
· a nursing team that supports the assessment of prisoners within a 24hr healthcare environment, with a 15 dedicated cells.
· a Community Mental Health Team that offers Early help & signposting, along with primary and secondary mental health care models of engagement similar to those experienced and replicated within the wider community.
We want to employ a nurse lwho has a real understanding for the needs of the prisoner/offender population who can also bring innovation and change to our services.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be responsible for:
· The facilitation, promotion and supervision of education, clinical practices and audit.
· The management of the clinical area in the absence of the Clinical Team Manager.
· Overseeing the assessment planning implementation and evaluation of nursing care within agreed parameters, and have a working knowledge of local, national policies and legislation which govern current service provision.
· Identifying and contributing to others training needs.
· Ensuring the promotion of issues of equality diversity and rights in accordance with good practice and legislation.
· Ensuring effective communication pathways exist.
· Undertake assessment on behalf of the Clinical Team Manager as part of the regional rota for 24hr healthcare bed management and determine admission where necessary.
· Develop effective packages of care using evidence base practice to support prisons with mental health issues, delivering interventions that support recovery and tools that evaluate patient progress.
· To participate in education and training linked to mental health and physical health pathways.

Qualification and Experience
Essential criteria
- Qualification- RMN or RNLD
- Previous experience and completed preceptorship
Desirable criteria
- Demonstrates previous line management experience
Previous experience of working in Secure setting
Essential criteria
- Previous experience of working in a secure setting, such as PICU, MSU
Desirable criteria
- Previous prison experience.
Mentor/assessor for student nurses.
Essential criteria
- Supervisor/mentorship experience
Desirable criteria
- Leadership qualification
- Student mentorship qualification or GOLD badge holder
