Trainee Endoscopy Nurse Practitioner

Job overview

Due to a department expansion within our forward-thinking endoscopy unit, an opportunity has become available within the gastroenterology directorate for the position of a trainee Endoscopy Nurse Practitioner.  

 This desirable post is suitable for a candidate with a proven track record of endoscopy clinical care, to include therapeutic and diagnostic endoscopy techniques and procedures, and the willingness and aptitude for self-directed learning in endoscopy 

 The trainee Endoscopy Nurse Practitioner will work as part of the current Endoscopy Nurse Practitioner team to learn clinical endoscopy procedures to support the Gastroenterology and Surgical clinical colleagues in the Endoscopy Unit. Candidates will be supported on a training programme to incorporate either upper or lower procedures. This may involve travel and overnight stays to accommodate the course, so flexibility is essential.  

 

When competence is proven in the first modality, the candidate will progress to Band 7, whilst the second modality is studied. The candidate will be expected to perform their first modality independently whilst studying for the second modality. The band 7 post-holder will also be expected to facilitate IDA clinics and pre-assessment clinics on a rotational basis.  

Informal conversations are welcomed and encouraged. 

Main duties of the job

  • Perform under supervision diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy; set sessions are identified however, flexibility is promoted (i.e., move lists, take extra sessions, cover annual leave/sickness/emergency issues) 

  • Perform a comprehensive advanced specialist assessment of patient needs. Using their own judgement: plan, implement and evaluate their clinical caseload according to changing health care needs and in conjunction with their supervisor/mentor. 

  • Demonstrate a high degree of personal and professional autonomy, drawing upon specialist knowledge and highly developed physical and professional skills, working within set endoscopy procedures and guidelines. These must be used to meet clinical needs of the patient.

    Administer and be accountable for the giving of sedation under the remit of the Trust/Endoscopy PGD, recognising adverse reactions and administering the appropriate reversal agents of required 

    Deal with highly complex clinical situations for example recognising when patients are experiencing adverse reactions to the nurse-led endoscopy procedure, i.e., cardiac, respiratory, acute haemorrhage, reaction to sedation or violence and aggression. Use skills and experience to intervene and correct complications during independent lists.

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria
  • 1st Level Registered Nurse
Desirable criteria
  • Educated to Degree Level
  • Masters degree or equivalent

Knowledge and Training

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of postgraduate study and continuous portfolio
  • Evidence of Professional Development
  • Willingness to commit to programme of theoretical and practical study
  • Cannulation, Venepuncture and IV medication administration
  • Knowledge and understanding of JAG and GRS accreditation requirements
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of teaching (including preceptorship)
  • ompetence in the use of diathermy (ERBE) with an understanding of health and safety for yourself, patients and staff

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Extensive experience within Gastroenterology / Endoscopy
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence in Endoscopy at a senior level
  • Experience of delivering outpatient provision (clinic/nurse-led) inclusive of new patients/follow-ups and rapid access criteria
  • Previous Clinical Nurse Specialist experience
