Job overview
We are seeking an experienced, compassionate and forward-thinking Clinical Matron to lead and enhance the delivery of high-quality care across our Inpatient Maternity Services within the Women & Children’s Division.
This pivotal leadership role spans a diverse portfolio, including our inpatient antenatal ward, triage and scheduled care services, and inpatient postnatal ward. As a visible, proactive and approachable leader, you will champion family-centred care, uphold the highest standards of safety and quality, and foster a culture of continuous improvement and professional development across these specialist areas.
Main duties of the job
To provide clinical, professional and midwifery leadership to a group of wards in a clinical team/ teams.
To be identifiable, highly visible, authoritative and accessible to patients, carers and staff for assistance, advice and support.
This post provides strong compassionate, transformational, and inclusive leadership, with a visible, senior midwifery presence accessible to staff, our service users and their families for advice, assistance and support. The post holder will be accountable for the delivery of optimum quality family-centred care in their area/s of responsibility, and in line with the ten key matron responsibilities outlined nationally.
As Matron the post holder is expected to ensure that the services provided are responsive to needs, that the planning of services involves women, birthing people and their families, and reflects the diverse population served. There is an expectation that the post holder will work closely with other matrons, divisional directors of Midwifery and Nursing, and colleagues within the division and across divisional and Trust boundaries in the interest of safe and equitable care.
You will represent the clinical speciality and the WCH division as required internally and externally, deputising when requested for the Deputy Divisional Director of and Midwifery Nursing. This post holder is expected to work part of their time available within clinical practice.

Education and qualifications
Essential criteria
- NMC registration
- Educated to Masters level or willing to undertake
Desirable criteria
- Relevant accredited post registration qualification at Masters level
Application/interview
Essential criteria
- Broad working knowledge of Maternity services
- Ability to work independently and within a team
- Current knowledge of Midwifery ‘Best Practice’
- Evidence of teaching, facilitating and presenting
- Experience of leading teams including positively managing change, and managing team member in all aspects of their performance
- Competent in advanced communications skills, including negation, advocacy, motivational interviewing and encouraging behavioural change
- Initiative, flexibility and adaptability to meet needs of a changing service
- Ability to cope with intense emotional issues presented in the course of work, and to support others
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of Acute General Hospital systems
- Experience of undertaking research and audit projects
- Implementing midwifery/nursing guidance, and championing good clinical practice
- Able to prepare and deliver effective presentations to large audiences
