Have you thought about a change of direction but not sure what avenue to take?    If you possess an eye for detail, diligence and a commitment to excellent patient care and would like to try a specialist field of practice then this might provide a unique opportunity for you.  We are looking for someone who is hard working and flexible in their approach to support the smooth running of the HPB service.

The HPB service is the regional referral centre for pancreatic and liver surgery. You will be responsible for ensuring all patients that are referred to the service are appropriately assessed, treated and followed up by liaising with local / regional teams and that the correct surveillance programme is undertaken.  You will work initially under the supervision of the HPB Clinical Nurse Specialist but will be expected to be able to identify potential risks/ concerns and act on them accordingly ensuring patient safety is kept at all times. 

 Informal visits encouraged

Main duties of the job

Ensure cancer pathways are adhered to in a timely manner, act on this as appropriate when required. 

Support patients and their families, carers throughout the HPB pathways / treatment plans for benign and cancer patients. Putting the patient at the centre if the service provided.

Liaise with the regional teams to ensure the smooth transition of care to the specialist centre and referral back. Identify and act on any issues that may arise. Ensure all investigations and results are obtained as required. 

Support team members in providing patient care and carry out MDT outcomes to ensure cancer breaches do not occur.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered nurse.
  • Significant post registration experience in acute surgery or acute medicine
  • Evidence of continuous professional development
  • Teaching or mentoring qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Degree
  • Research Module
  • Post registration qualification in speciality or willingness to complete

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate expert nursing skills
  • Evidence of mentorship/preceptorship roles
  • Accept personal accountability for own practice
  • Recent extensive ward experience in surgery or acute medicine
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of formal/ informal teaching
  • HPB surgical experience

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of evidence based practice
  • Understanding of Clinical Governance
  • Understanding and knowledge / Willingness to learn about the HPB specialist field
  • NMC code of professional conduct
  • Good understanding of cancer pathways / willingness to learn
Desirable criteria
