Job overview
The Medical Assessment Unit (MAU) is a fast paced unit where patients are assessed and either transferred or discharged. It is a 27 bedded unit with a high turnover of patients. There is a range of medical specialities seen in the department. We aim for our patients to be assessed reviewed and plan for transfer or discharge within 10 hours.

Overview
The post holder will be enthusiastic about delivering high quality fundamental care to patients under the guidance of a Registered Practitioner in a caring, compassionate and sensitive manner.

- Protecting and maintaining the patient’s privacy and dignity at all times
- Providing individualised care respecting personal beliefs and preferences
- Alerting the Registered Practitioner to any change or concern relating to the welfare of a patient in a timely manner
Main duties of the job
Clinical Responsibilities
- Ensure patient safety is maintained and patient experience is positive by caring for all patients, relatives and colleagues with respect, dignity, compassion and courtesy in accordance with the Trust values.
- Communicate effectively and respectfully with patients, relatives and colleagues utilising verbal and non-verbal communication methods.
- Actively involve the patient in decision making around their care and recognise the importance of placing them at the centre of their care.
- Assist male and female patients to meet their hygiene and toileting needs whilst promoting independence where possible.
- Monitor and record body waste clearly and accurately as directed by the Registered Practitioner.
- Assist patients with eating and drinking to ensure their nutritional and hydration needs are met. Monitor nutritional and fluid intake clearly and accurately as directed by the Registered Practitioner.

Education and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Maths and English skills equivalent to Level 1 Literacy and Numeracy
- Completion of Care Certificate or equivalent experience
- Completion of short courses to undertake patient and clinical care duties, completion of a competency-based workbook or equivalent relevant experience to vocational qualification level 3
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of working as a Healthcare Support Worker
- Experience of caring for patients in an acute setting
- Experience of working within a team
Key Skills
Essential criteria
- Ability to communicate clearly in English in writing, via IT, verbally and using the telephone
