Job overview
The post holder will work within the Midwifery Education Team to assist with the facilitating of clinical education and training and to ensure all maternity staff provide safe evidenced care. In addition to delivering formal education and training there is the requirement that a high level of clinical visibility and competence is maintained, approximately 50 % per week.
You will be required to support maternity staff including newly recruited midwives, whilst acting as a professional role model and using clinical expertise. The post holder will need to demonstrate safe, evidence based- this is in the first sentence and feels a repeat midwifery practices practice and be a role model.
The post holder will support the Maternity Division in its Education Programme to deliver the requirements as detailed in the Training Need Analysis for all clinicians.
Wider aspects include contributing to corporate projects associated with both National and Trust wide priorities and objectives. These are related but not exclusive to recruitment and retention initiatives.

Main duties of the job
Support the professional development programme for Maternity Staff in
collaboration with the Deputy Head of Perinatal Governance.
Facilitate the support of all Maternity staff in clinical areas.
Contribute to the development of pre and post registration courses.
To participate in the formulation of clinical guidelines and policies, providing research-based information to the process.
Support the preceptorship programme, along with the other clinical educators and the retention midwife for newly qualified staff including annual appraisals for preceptorship midwives, and working alongside clinically.
Lead on the provision of induction, orientation and clinical support for all new maternity staff.
To provide education and training in practice, to include skills drills and
practical skills necessary for the midwife’s extended role. Participate in
teaching on the multidisciplinary in-house training programme.

Education and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Relevant Degree or evidence of further study and experience to the equivalent
- Up to date professional portfolio demonstrating evidence of personal and professional development
- Conversant with NMC Rules governing practice
- Registered Midwife
Desirable criteria
- NIPE qualification (newborn and infant physical examination)
- SSSA assessor (or willing to complete)
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience in all midwifery pathways
- Experience of multidisciplinary working and interagency working
- Experience of mentoring and developing staff
- Experience as Band 6 rotational Midwife 3 years
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of teaching and assessing skills, including design, coordination and evaluation
- Can demonstrate involvement in change management
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Sound knowledge of current professional issues
- Understanding of government initiatives
- Ability to gather, analyse and interpret highly complex and conflicting information
- Sound knowledge of Maternity Improvement Programme
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of involvement in audit cycles and reviewing practice
- Knowledge of NMC Midwifery Standards of Pre-reg Education
- Knowledge of CNST and National Drivers for Educational Requirements within Maternity
Skills and Abilities
Essential criteria
- Capable of working autonomously
- Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
- Significant IT Skills
- Can demonstrate good presentation skills
Desirable criteria
- Good report writing skills
- Project management skills
- Ability to motivate staff and influence midwives and other professionals
