We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Nurse Consultant to provide specialist strategic and clinical leadership in sexual health as part of the Communicable Disease Inclusion Health Programme in Health Protection Division. This is a pivotal national role where you will work closely with the senior leadership team in Health Protection to shape and implement strategic and operational plans that influence policy, deliver high quality services to protect and improve public health, and collaborate with professionals working across NHS and non-NHS sectors in Wales. 

About You:

You will be a senior nurse with a strong background in public health, sexual health, clinical leadership, and with experience of working at a national or strategic level. You will have proven skills in influencing policy, leading multidisciplinary teams, and engaging with a wide range of stakeholders. 

Main duties of the job

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee delivery of high quality sexual health services as provided through CDIHP (notably the Test & Post service) and to drive improvements to enhance public health protection and improvement. 

  • Provide specialist advice to inform and shape long-term strategic plans for sexual health across NHS and social care sectors in Wales. 

  • Lead the development of national policies, care pathways, and standards, ensuring they are effectively implemented and maintained across Wales. 

  • Act as a strategic link between Public Health Wales, Welsh Government, and frontline practitioners, ensuring timely and effective dissemination of guidance. 

  • Deliver expert clinical leadership to stakeholders, influencing best practice and fostering collaboration across sectors. 

  • Identify education and training needs, negotiating and supporting the development of professional learning initiatives. 

  • Support national research and development efforts by collaborating on evidence-based programmes and service redesign. 

  • Maintain nurse consultant-level practitioner expertise in line with the Professional Framework for Enhanced, Advanced and Consultant Clinical Practice in Wales. 

  • Be a key member of the Communicable Disease and Inclusion Health Programme (CDIHP) leadership team, bringing a specific emphasis on sexual health.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Educated to postgraduate level/Masters in Public Health degree or equivalent
  • Qualified Nurse
  • Programme Management qualification
  • Highly developed specialist knowledge, experience and training within sexual health
  • Evidence of ongoing and relevant continuing professional development, demonstrating significant strategic capabilities
Desirable criteria
  • PhD /Prof. Doc or willing to register for doctoral studies within regulated time frame
  • Qualification in Quality Improvement e.g. IQT Bronze / Silver or Gold or equivalent.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Extensive, proven experience working within Public Health/health organisations in a lead role
  • Senior level experience in field of Sexual health
  • Experience of working across multi agencies
  • Working at a regional and national level
  • Leading and delivering research
Desirable criteria
  • Developing care pathways
  • Involvement in or delivery of quality improvement programmes
  • Developing training Programmes
  • Development of effective business cases
  • Experience of quality improvement methodologies such as the Model for Improvement

Skills

Essential criteria
  • High level, of interpersonal and communication skills
  • The ability to work in complex and sometimes contentious areas
  • The ability to lead and communicate with a range of professionals and agencies to develop policies and guidance etc.
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Leadership and multi/inter disciplinary team working
  • Interpretation of complex data and information
  • To be able to use IT programs and keyboard skills
  • To have good clinical skills in relation to health protection
Desirable criteria
  • Developing policy or leading projects at a national level
  • Managing groups of staff/people

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • To have highly specialised knowledge of sexual health
  • To have the knowledge and use of strategic frameworks, guidance etc.
  • Knowledge and understanding of key national strategies

  • Knowledge and understanding of patient safety/quality improvement strategies in Wales and beyond
