Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Stroke Team for an enthusiastic and motivated nurse who would like to develop their clinical skills and promote effective quality of care to patients with stroke conditions.

The post is for a permanent 7.5 hrs Stroke Specialist Nurse in Stroke medicine.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will facilitate relevant practice development in line with National standards, guidance and best practice through clinical practice, leadership, education, research and audit which reflect the Health Board clinical governance objectives. You will work as an integral member of the wider multi-disciplinary team to promote clinical and cost-effective care.  

Potential candidates must have good communication and time management skills. They must be capable of supervising and educating staff, promoting personal and professional development within the team. The successful candidate must be able to use their own initiative but be able to work well as part of a team and know when to seek advice. Knowledge of evidence-based practice in stroke medicine is desirable.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

 

Working for our organisation

Hywel Dda University Health Board plans and provides NHS healthcare services for people living in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire, and bordering counties. 

We have over 13,000 staff and together we provide primary, community, in-hospital, mental health and learning disabilities services. 

We work in partnership with the three local authorities, as well as public, private and third sector colleagues, including our valued team of volunteers.

  • Four main hospitals: Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth; Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen; Prince Philip Hospital in Llanelli; and Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest 
  • Five community hospitals: Amman Valley and Llandovery hospitals in Carmarthenshire; Tregaron Hospital in Ceredigion; and Tenby and South Pembrokeshire hospitals in Pembrokeshire 
  • Two integrated care centres: Aberaeron and Cardigan in Ceredigion, and several other community settings 
  • 47 general practices (six of which are health board managed practices); dental practices (including four orthodontic); 97 community pharmacies; 43 general ophthalmic practices; and 8 ophthalmic domiciliary providers 
  • Numerous mental health and learning disabilities services

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse Level 1 with extensive post registration experience to include stroke care.
  • Willing to undertake an in house leadership development programme.
  • Willing to undertake all other training essential to role
  • Evidence of CPD
  • Clinical governance understanding
Desirable criteria
  • BSc (in health related subject) or willing to work toward.
  • Teaching and Assessing Module
  • Clinical Supervision Module
  • People management/supervision training.
  • Specific clinical training / education related to stroke care.

Language Skills

Desirable criteria
  • Welsh Speaker (Level 1)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Post registration experience, including experience in relevant clinical field to postgraduate diploma level
  • Experience of working within a multi professional environment
  • Able to work autonomously
  • Use of IT in clinical setting
  • Organisational policies/procedures
Desirable criteria
  • Clinical audit and research skills.
