The Maternity Outpatients Department Midwife is responsible for delivering high-quality, woman-centred antenatal care within the outpatient setting. Working as part of the multidisciplinary maternity team, the midwife provides assessment, monitoring, education, and support to women and their families throughout pregnancy and the postnatal period, ensuring safe, evidence-based practice at all times.

  • Provide comprehensive antenatal assessments, including history taking, physical examinations, and risk assessments

  • Monitor maternal and fetal wellbeing, including blood pressure monitoring, urinalysis, fetal growth assessment, iron transfusions and cardiotocography (CTG) where appropriate

  • Identify, manage, and escalate deviations from normal in accordance with clinical guidelines

  • Coordinate care for women with complex or high-risk pregnancies in collaboration with obstetricians and other healthcare professionals

  • Deliver health education and birth preparation advice, including infant feeding education and safeguarding awareness

  • Facilitate referrals to specialist services (e.g., diabetes, mental health, fetal medicine) when indicated

  • Maintain accurate, timely clinical documentation and electronic records

  • Participate in audit, quality improvement initiatives, and service development within the outpatient department

  • Support student midwives and contribute to a positive learning environment

  • Promote equality, diversity, and culturally sensitive care

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Antenatal Clinic & Antenatal Day Assessment Unit

We are seeking a motivated and compassionate Band 6 Midwife to join our dynamic Antenatal Services team, working across the Antenatal Clinic and Antenatal Day Assessment Unit (ANDAU). This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced midwife who is passionate about delivering high-quality, evidence-based, woman-centred care within a busy outpatient setting.

As a Band 6 Midwife, you will play a key role in providing comprehensive antenatal assessment, monitoring, and care for women with both low- and high-risk pregnancies. You will be responsible for the clinical assessment and management of women presenting with pregnancy-related concerns, ensuring timely escalation and collaboration with the wider multidisciplinary team.

The Role

Working autonomously within agreed guidelines and in partnership with obstetric, anaesthetic, neonatal and specialist teams, you will:

  • Provide holistic antenatal care including booking appointments, routine reviews, and consultant-led clinic support

  • Undertake assessment and management of women attending the Antenatal Day Assessment Unit with concerns such as ongoing reduced fetal movements, hypertension, anaemia, or suspected fetal growth restriction

  • Perform and interpret clinical observations including CTG monitoring, urinalysis, blood pressure monitoring, and fetal growth assessment

  • Recognise deviations from normal and escalate appropriately in line with national and local guidelines

  • Support women with complex pregnancies including diabetes, multiple pregnancy, fetal growth restriction, and other medical or obstetric conditions

  • Deliver education and advice to women and families regarding pregnancy, birth preparation, infant feeding, and postnatal care

  • Maintain accurate, contemporaneous electronic documentation

  • Contribute to audit, quality improvement, and service development initiatives

  • Act as a role model and support junior staff and student midwives

About You

To be successful in this role you will:

  • Be a Registered Midwife with current NMC registration

  • Have post-registration experience in antenatal care

  • Demonstrate sound clinical decision-making and risk assessment skills

  • Be confident in CTG interpretation and escalation processes

  • Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Thrive in a fast-paced environment and prioritise workload effectively

  • Be committed to continuous professional development and high standards of care
