An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and motivated Senior Midwife to apply for the position of Labour Ward Co-ordinator within East Cheshire NHS Trust.

East Cheshire provides an obstetric-led labour ward alongside an integrated birth centre for low-risk women, with access to two pool rooms. This role offers the opportunity to work within a modern, supportive environment that promotes choice, safety, and high-quality woman-centred care.

You will work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team, demonstrate sound clinical judgement, and support the team to deliver safe, high-quality intrapartum care on a shift-by-shift basis, even under pressure.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will act as shift leader on the labour ward, providing a high level of clinical expertise, leadership, and operational management across the maternity department, including obstetric theatre and community services as required. The role involves supporting medical, midwifery, and support staff to ensure the safe, effective, and efficient delivery of maternity care.

The post holder will be responsible for coordinating staff and workload across the antenatal, postnatal, and labour ward areas, leading the management of acute obstetric emergencies, and working within the Clinical Governance framework to maintain and improve standards of care.

The role forms part of the senior midwifery team responsible for the seamless 24/7 running of the maternity unit and includes participation in the on-call rota to support the provision of a continuous maternity service.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Midwife with current NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council) registration
  • Midwifery BSc (Bachelor of Sciences) (or equivalent)
Desirable criteria
  • Leadership, management or mentorship qualification
  • Advanced fetal monitoring or CTG (Cardiotocography) trainer qualification
  • Professional Midwifery Advocate

Knowledge & Skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellent knowledge of intrapartum care, fetal monitoring and CTG (Cardiotocography) interpretation
  • Strong understanding of risk assessment, escalation processes and clinical governance
  • Ability to prioritise workload and manage competing clinical demands
  • Highly developed leadership, decision-making and problem-solving skills
  • Effective communication skills, including escalation and handover
  • Ability to support, supervise and mentor staff in a busy clinical environment
  • Competent in documentation and use of electronic maternity records
  • Understanding of local and national safety initiatives
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of workforce planning, rota & finance management

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant post-registration experience as a midwife, including labour ward experience
  • Experience of coordinating care and managing workload within a busy maternity setting
  • Experience in supporting and supervising junior staff, students, or multidisciplinary team members
  • Experience of managing obstetric emergencies and high-risk intrapartum care
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience in a labour ward coordinator or shift leader role
  • Experience of audit, quality improvement or service development
  • Experience of incident review and learning processes
