Job overview

The Interventional Radiology Day Case Unit comprises of an Interventional Radiology Theatre with a 5-bed ward attached for day case patients.  There are two CT scanners which are located within radiology that biopsies, drainages, and other interventional radiological procedures are performed in.

The successful candidate will work as a radiology nurse within the radiology department which includes the Interventional Radiology theatre, the Interventional Radiology Day Case Unit and the CT scanners

The Interventional Radiology Day Case unit currently operates Monday to Friday between 8am to 6pm . You will be required to work flexibly between these times.

Main duties of the job

A radiology nurse is involved with the assessment, planning, and care of patients who undergo diagnostic, interventional, and therapeutic procedures. Duties will include admission and discharge of patients and caring for patients pre, peri and post- procedure.  The radiology nurse will also undertake scrub duties to assist with procedures in the Interventional Theatre. Some procedures are also performed in the CT Department assisting the Radiologist with drainages and biopsies. There will be some occasional requirements to work in the cardiac catheter laboratory alongside their nursing team to support the services as required.

Key Responsibilities  

To perform comprehensive assessment of patient nursing needs, plan, implement and evaluate care delivery according to changing healthcare needs.   

To collect, collate and report information, maintaining accurate patient records.  

To work collaboratively with other professionals and agencies to ensure needs are met in relation to care input and support for ongoing care needs.   

To establish and maintain effective communication with patients, carers and  relatives.   

To recognise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations.  

To be responsible for the care and safety of each patient, their property and valuables whilst they are in the department. 

To encourager the involvement of patients and their carers in all aspects of care.  

To provide patients, family and carers with sufficient and detailed information regarding a proposed examination or procedure, thus ensuring that full, informed consent is freely given.  

To advise patients on pre and post procedural care and expectations and health promotion as appropriate.  

To assist the consultants in a variety of diagnostic/interventional procedures.  This role is in addition to acting as scrub nurse.

Essential criteria
  • Good general nursing experience.
  • Registered nurse (adult)
  • Understanding of quality and change in the clinical setting
  • Ability to communicate in a variety of settings with patients of varying levels of understanding.
  • Ability to create rapport with patients in a short space of time with very little background knowledge. This is particularly important when supporting those patients who have been given bad news e.g. diagnosis of cancer.
  • Ability to present factual information and deal with questions.
  • Ability to maintain accurate patient records.
  • Ability to develop effective interpersonal skills with colleagues in the health care setting.
  • Willingness to undertake ‘In-Hospital Life Support’ training
  • Possess basic IT skills in e-mail
  • Possess basic knowledge of professional and NHS issues.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience within a cardiac catheter lab or interventional radiology suite.
  • Commitment to self-development
  • Competence in venous cannulation and IV drug administration.

Physical

Essential criteria
  • Frequent moving and handling of patients using manual handling techniques
  • Frequent pushing and pulling of trolleys/ chairs and holding patients

Emotional effort

  • Dealing with emotional circumstances and patients who may be terminally ill.
