An exciting opportunity has arisen for a secondment to cover Maternity leave as a Specialist Heart Failure Nurse based at FGH. 
 
 
You will play an active part in clinical practice, education, research/audit and the implementation of national guidelines and be required to make quality improvements in the provision of heart failure . Applicants for this post are invited from registered nurses who are enthusiastic, motivated and have excellent communication skills, some cardiac  experience would be an advantage but is not essential.   
 

Main duties of the job

 

  • The role will be to work within the cardiology team to assist with the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of individualised care as per evidence based national and local guidelines  ( ESC 2021 , NICE 2025  and Trust )
  • The successful person will  learn how to rule out heart failure  in collaboration with cardiology specialist nurses  and medical colleagues .
  • You will learn in conjunction with the cardiologist , the cardiac nurses and the community heart failure nurses  to work within the rapidly growing heart failure  Service.
  • You will need to have good communication and interaction skills to provide specialist advice to patients , carers and relatives .
  • Clinical supervision will be provided where necessary .
  • The role will involve data collection for the national data base for HF  NICOR  (nicor.or.uk ) .
  •  You  will be required to make safe, timely arrangements for monitoring for example renal blood testing , analysis and follow up appointments.
  • You  will learn skills in heart failure assessment and management  to assist with regular reviews of  inpatients which will enable  recognition of  their improvement  or deterioration. The aim would be  to promote safe discharge when optimised or to a escalate medical review if patient continues to decompensate .
  • You  will be able to act as a signpost to other multi disciplines  to ensure patients needs and best interests are met . 
 

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals-Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre. 

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services. 

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses. 

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • 1st Level Registered Nurse
  • Degree in relevant subject
  • Specialist post graduate level training.
  • Or equivalent relevant experience which demonstrates a clear programme of knowledge and skills development.
  • Or short courses combined with relevant clinical experience.
Desirable criteria
  • Postgraduate Certificate/Diploma in relevant subject

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience in specialist field of practice.
  • Experience of providing clinical supervision.
  • Experience of teaching/training/mentoring others
