Job overview

We currently have an exciting opportunity on the Children's Ward, Furness General Hospital for a substantive clinical leader position. 

The Children’s Ward is a busy mixed speciality unit providing care for a wide range of conditions. It compromises a 14 bed inpatient ward, 8 bed day care unit, and a 4 bed assessment unit.

Main duties of the job

  • Have continuing responsibility for the delivery of care needs and maintenance of clinical standards rotating through CYP services for Inpatients, Day Care and Assessment Unit
  • Provide effective leadership and support to all grades of staff; planning and directing activities to provide optimal standards of care
  • Ensure that the ward/department is clean and provides a safe environment for children, parents and staff
  • Deputise for Senior Nurses when required

Undertake Directorate site based management responsibilities as required.

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Education and qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Children’s Nurse
  • Post basic qualification relevant to children’s nursing
  • Teaching and assessing qualification
Desirable criteria
  • 1st degree or willingness to undertake same

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Recent experience at senior staff nurse level within children’s nursing
  • Evidence of clinical competence in a wide range of paediatric nursing skills
  • Understanding of the setting and monitoring of standards
  • Evidence of teaching and developing staff
Desirable criteria
  • Recent leadership development or willingness to undertake course

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Paediatric Life Support Skills
  • IT skills including word processing, email and internet
Desirable criteria
  • Advanced Paediatric Life support skills
