Based at the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle and/or West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven, you will be required to assess, plan, deliver and evaluate nursing care, operating as a member of the ward multidisciplinary team. You will also contribute as requested by the Ward Manager to the smooth running of the unit and possess relevant skills to work in different nursing disciplines.
The Band 5 Staff Nurse is a key member of the multidisciplinary team, responsible for delievering high-quality, evidence-based, family-centred care to infants, children, and young people admitted to one of our paediatric wards. NCIC have two paediatric wards, one at The West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven and one at The Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle.
The role of the Band 5 staff nurse is to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care in line with Trust policies and professional standards, ensuring safe and compassionate care is provided at all times. Further the post holder will meet the physical, emotional, and developmental needs of children and their families with the hospital setting, where nurses must be flexible and competent across multiple paediatric specialities.
Main duties of the job
Applications are invited from Registered Nurses with active registration. You will have experience of work in a caring environment and be able to deal with a continually changing workload.
Please note salary is dependant on previous NHS experience. An additional 12% is paid on top of any bank hours worked in WTD pay.

Experience
Essential criteria
- Understanding of child development, family-centered care, and safeguarding children procedures
- Awareness of national and local policies affecting paediatric nursing practice
- Ability to recognise signs of clinical deterioration in children and act appropriately
Desirable criteria
- Previous experience working on a paediatric ward or in an acute hospital setting (e.g. during training or employment)
- Experience with elective surgical patients or shared care oncology
- Experience in using central venous access devices (CVADs)
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registered Children's Nurse with active registration.
- Evidence of ongoing professional development (CPD)
- Safeguarding Children Level 3 (or willingness to achieve on next available course)
- PILS (Paediatric Immediate Life Support) or willingness to undertake
Desirable criteria
- Teaching, mentoring, or assessing qualification (e.g. ENB 998, practice assessor/supervisor)
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Awareness of infection prevention and control principles
- IV Therapy training and competency (or willingness to complete on appointment)
Skills & Aptitudes
Essential criteria
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care for children and young people
- Ability to prioritise workload, use initiative, and manage time effectively
- Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and upholding professional standards
