Main duties of the job

  •           Undertake a comprehensive assessment of the patient’s physical, psychological, social and past ophthalmic history.
  •          Ophthalmic examination.
  • Use of assessment or monitoring tools where indicated.
  • Analysing and synthesising findings from any relevant assessments, tests and investigations. 
  •        Request investigations appropriate to their scope of practice. 
  •        Interpret specific investigations and act on investigation reports.
  • Use appropriate guidelines and/or protocols where they exist.  present findings to an MDT forum and/or with other health and social care professionals.. 
  • Determine frequency of review. 
  • Treatment and care to prevent/minimise secondary complications.
  • Identification and management of deterioration.
  • Medical emergencies commonly seen within the speciality.   
  • Health promotion including lifestyle choices.  
  • Advice and coach patient/client/carers about their condition, treatment options and health/lifestyle activities.
  •  Admit and discharge from speciality area, depending on patient need and relevant legislation. This includes referral to a range of appropriate health and social care professionals and agencies.
  • Act as an expert clinical advisor for colleagues across a range of settings.
  • Act as a resource or educator to others.
  •          Lead and/or contribute to the development and delivery of specialist education programmes.
  • Will participate and collaborate in research and audit programmes related to the speciality.

Disclosure and Barring Service:

On 28 November 2020, the new Disclosure and Barring Service filtering rules will come into effect.

The changes mean that:               

  • youth cautions, reprimands and final warnings will no longer be subject to automatic disclosure

Please note the cost of the DBS check is increasing from 2nd December and the new cost will be

Standard DBS check £21.50, Enhanced DBS check £49.50 + any admin costs.

Standard Check: £18 + Administration cost of £3.85 = £21.85. Deducted at £6.85 from 1st month salary and £5 deducted from salary over following 3 months.

Enhanced Check: £38 + administration cost of £3.90 = £41.90. Deducted at £11.90 from 1st month salary and £10 deducted from salary over following 3 months.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • Active Registration with Nursing and Midwifery Council.
  • • Postgraduate diploma/study at Level 7 incorporating clinical work based learning and has a core educational focus on the development of competence within their field of practice
  • • NST307 or equivalent.
Desirable criteria
  • • Master’s Degree
  • • Non-medical Nurse prescriber.

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Currently working in Clinical Nurse Specialist Post in ophthalmology speciality.
  • • Extensive post-registration clinical experience and practice.
  • • Extensive post-registration clinical experience and practice.
  • • Highly developed specialist knowledge, underpinned by theory and experience
  • • Will be expected to undertake any required skills training for the role.
  • • Must have knowledge of the Four Pillars of Practice and their application in the clinical environment.
  • • Has working knowledge of local and national Advanced Clinical Nurse Specialist/ Advanced Practice agendas.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience with eye emergency care.
