Job overview

This clinical leader role involves coordinating staff and activities on a dynamic and ever evolving Day Surgery Unit - Day Surgery staff currently work across 3 units within the Westmorland General Hospital. This post will be well suited to enthusiastic, motivated nurses wishing to work within a welcoming team.

Day Surgery activity includes caring for a range of patients pre and post surgery from a wide number of specialities : Trauma & Orthopaedics, General, Maxfacial, Dental, ENT, Gynaecology, Chronic Pain, Urology & Ophthalmology. 

We also assist medical staff with clinics for patients undergoing precision point biopsies (prostate biopsies), cystoscopies, nipple tattooing, one stop clinics, chronic pain clinics. Day Surgery staff also run run nurse led urology clinics :Trial without Catheter Clinics and Bladder Treatment Clinics. 

Main duties of the job

Act as an effective role model whilst having responsibility for the management of the wards in conjunction with and in the absence of the Ward Manager

Assist Ward Manager with recruitment and selection of staff and be responsible for a safe and effective duty roster

Develop and implement policies and actively look for ways to develop services

Co-ordinate the provision of high-quality patient care with ensuring standards of cleanliness and a safe environment

Lead in the professional development and performance management of staff in conjunction with the Ward Manager. 

Participate in the Trust Appraisal and Development reviews for staff and lead and deliver educational and training programmes

Act as a Bleep holder for WGH Site 

 

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals-Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre. 

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services. 

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses. 

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Essential criteria
  • Minimum 3 yrs experience as 1st level RGN
  • Evidence of teaching/mentoring staff
  • Self motivated, enthusiastic and flexible with excellent communication skills
  • Assertive, calm and objective under pressure
  • Commitment to CPD of self and others
Desirable criteria
  • Post registration management/leadership experience
  • Minimum 2 years surgical experience
