Home Dialysis Specialist Nurse Band 6 37.5 hours per week - Permanent
Working throughout North Cumbria the Home Dialysis Team aim to provide high quality, individualised care to those requiring either peritoneal or home haemodialysis.
The main duties of this post revolve around the delivery of specialised nursing care to patients requiring home dialysis treatment.
Assess, plan, deliver and evaluate nursing care within the remit of the service aiming to reduce morbidity / mortality.
Provision of specialist nursing advice to patients and other members of the multidisciplinary team in order to ensure appropriate treatment and care is delivered to the patient at all times.
Main duties of the job
· Play an integral role in the delivery of care to patients with chronic renal impairment.
· Ensure continuing day to day provision of specialist care and guidance.
· Act in accordance with the NMC code of professional conduct.
· Perform / request blood investigations where necessary, with consultant authorisation as required. Analyse results and seek advice from medical staff, making recommendations for change in treatment where appropriate.
· Exercise good clinical judgment appropriate to level of competence, experience and skills
· Assess and interpret conditions relating to the care of patients with chronic renal impairment and identify appropriate clinical situations requiring medical practitioner input.
· Work with other multidisciplinary team members in delivering an evidence based approach to management of patients on dialysis.
· Review patient’s nutritional status with renal dietitians, referring as required.
· Ensure nursing care delivered is evidence based, evaluating and implementing new ideas and development.
· Ensure use of effective manual handling procedures.

Essential criteria
- Registered nurse with current registration
- ENB136 or equivalent
- ENB998 or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- Further relevant postgraduate development to diploma equivalent.
Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria
- All aspects of renal / nephrology nursing
- Teaching within a health care setting
- CAPD and APD
- Continuing professional development with portfolio.
- Relevant experience of the care of patients requiring renal replacement therapies
- Current developments within nursing
- Budget management
- Risk management
- Quality issues
Skills & Aptitudes
Essential criteria
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills
- Able to work within a team or independently
- Competent in cannulation, drug administration, taking blood
