Job overview
This consultant Multi Professional Approved Clinician (MPAC) post is an exciting new role within an acute inpatient unit (Ward 36) at the Radbourne Unit, Derbyshire. It is an opportunity to shape the workforce strategy.
The MPAC Consultant will provide strong, visible clinical leadership within the developing pathway for male inpatient unit and provide expert guidance and support to other areas of the organisation that require their expertise. You will work alongside a medical consultant to lead the MDT and provide a patient centred care. You will undertake responsible clinician duty for all your patients on the ward.
You will support individuals using the service to improve and manage their mental health, work towards their recovery and personal goals and manage ongoing risks in preparation for community living.
The role provides highly specialist clinical expertise, leadership and assurance across services, supporting high standards of care, safety, quality and governance. The post holder will work autonomously within national legislation, professional codes of practice and Trust policies, while contributing to service development, quality improvement and system working.
Main duties of the job
You will be the Responsible Clinician for those under your care in the acute inpatient unit. Focused on ensuring that patients on your ward always receive person centred care and are managed safely, effectively and with compassion is a priority. As the Responsible Clinician you will lead, coordinate, and deliver care and complete all statutory duties required.
You must have a good understanding of psychotropic medications and ability to prescribe in patients with complex mental health issues. Support will be available via the pharmacist and the consultant psychiatrist on the ward.
You must have substantial experience of providing consultant level care in acute inpatient environments.

You will carry a clinical caseload and will be the Responsible Clinician for those under your care. Focused on ensuring that patients on your caseload always receive person centred care and are managed safely, effectively and with compassion is a priority. As the Responsible Clinician you will lead, coordinate, and deliver care and complete all statutory duties required.
• Act as an Approved Clinician and, where appointed, Responsible Clinician, undertaking statutory duties in line with the Mental Health Act 1983 (as amended) and associated Codes of Practice.
• Hold clinical responsibility for the assessment, formulation, treatment planning and oversight of a defined caseload with complex and high-risk presentations.
• Exercise autonomous professional judgement in highly complex clinical situations, including statutory decision-making and risk management.
• Lead and coordinate multidisciplinary input to care, ensuring care is person-centred, evidence-based, trauma-informed and recovery focused.
• Provide expert clinical advice, consultation and second opinions within scope of practice.
• Ensure physical health considerations are appropriately integrated into care, including medication management and monitoring where relevant.

Qualifcations
Essential criteria
- Core professional qualification in a recognised mental health discipline.
- Registration with the relevant professional and statutory body
- Approved Clinician status under the Mental Health Act (or approved at appointment).
- Educated to degree level with evidence of advanced post-graduate study.
- Educated to master’s degree level or equivalent
- Doctoral-level qualification or equivalent (depending on the professional background applicants must demonstrate equivalent doctorate level knowledge and expertise within their field.
- Independent / non-medical prescribing qualification
Knowledge / Experience
Essential criteria
- Substantial post-qualification experience at senior or consultant clinical level.
- Significant experience of autonomous clinical practice with complex and high-risk presentations.
- Expert knowledge of mental health legislation, statutory frameworks and professional standards.
- • Substantial experience of providing consultant level care in acute inpatient environments
