A Head of Nursing vacancy (Fixed Term Contract) has arisen in the Clinical Sciences, Cancer and Diagnostic division. The post will lead the Blood and Cancer directorate. This covers 2 inpatient wards and multiple Departments & associated teams. We are looking for a strong leadership style and applicants require demonstrable experience in Clinical Governance, Risk Management, HR, Clinical Incidents and Complaints and Budgetary Management. You also must be a Registered Nurse or ODP and have the relevant clinical knowledge and skills. The Head of Nursing is a key stakeholder in the service line and you will be expected to work as part of the triumverate structure.

Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.

The postholder will lead on the operational delivery of the nursing strategy within the Directorate ensuring nursing practice is high quality and is focused on the values and behaviours outlined in the 6Cs; care, compassion, competence, communication, courage and commitment and aligns with the organisational values.
They will be expected to adopt a highly visible and accessible approach for patients and staff, empowering and developing staff to undertake a wide range of clinical activities to ensure that the care provided is in line with latest local and national guidance.
They are accountable for ensuring the appropriate management of nursing teams, clinical leadership, infection prevention and control and standards of patient care; the post holder will, in turn, both support and hold Matrons and senior staff to account ensuring that organisational key performance, Care Quality Commission standards and quality indicators are monitored and results are addressed and actioned.
The postholder will be expected to act as a positive role model ensuring effective professional leadership, demonstrating competent, accountable clinical practice and modelling of the core values of the Trust, providing professional leadership, advice and support to Nursing colleagues within the Division leading on specific projects as required

To provide nursing and midwifery leadership supporting the Division triumvirate to ensure the delivery of high-quality services in line with the Trust’s core vision and values.
To support the fostering of an environment where all colleagues work together effectively to support the delivery of outstanding services for patients.
To operationalise the delivery of nursing key performance indicators against agreed targets, as measured against five Key Lines of Enquiry (KLOE)
To work cohesively with the Divisional Director of Nursing and Integrated Professions to develop services within the Division, working with colleagues to identify and agree plans for improvement, taking into account research outcomes and the planning of clinical pathways across the health community lead on the requirements for Infection, Prevention and Control agenda for the Directorate, delivering the agenda through the Matrons in line with the Matrons’ Charter.
To represent the Directorate and profession both internal to the organisation and externally as required f) To present highly complex information both internally and externally to the organisation on matters such as clinical performance and care indicators
To lead on the annual nursing and midwifery establishment review for areas of responsibility within the Directorate, including advising on workforce redesign.
To agree budgeting and resourcing of applicable clinical areas within the Directorate, holding delegated budget holders to account.
To use professional expertise to advise the senior management team on clinical pathways.

- Substantial demonstrable experience working in health care
- Demonstrable experience of clinical working in acute hospital settings
- Proven knowledge of a wide range of conditions
- Proven knowledge and demonstrable experience of providing clinical supervision and being a clinical role model
- Good proven working knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act and demonstrable experience in use for clinical decision-making, Best Interest decisions, DOLS etc

- Excellent communication skills, with effectiveness in written and verbal communications including ability to communicate effectively with patients, families and carers on sensitive issues

- Ability to continually reprioritise workload depending on situation. Able to cope with frequent interruptions to deal with urgent issues/problems
- Ability to present written and verbal reports – presenting highly complex data and holding complex discussions with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
- Be resilient in ably handling the challenges of highly distressing incidents, complaints, staffing issues, concerns re operational underperformance
