Located on the doorstep of the stunning Dartmoor National Park and close to Devon's beautiful coastline, University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust is a Level 3 maternity unit providing care for approximately 3,400 women each year.

As a Community Midwife, you will provide high-quality, personalised care throughout pregnancy and the postnatal period, working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to deliver safe, compassionate and woman-centred care. You will support women and families to achieve the best possible outcomes while promoting informed choice and continuity of care.

Main duties of the job

Main Duties

  • Manage a caseload of women providing antenatal and postnatal care within the community setting.
  • Promote normality and support informed choice throughout the maternity journey.
  • Undertake routine and specialist assessments, identifying and escalating concerns appropriately.
  • Work in partnership with obstetric, neonatal, safeguarding, health visiting and primary care teams.
  • Participate in health promotion activities to improve outcomes for women, babies and families.
  • Maintain accurate and contemporaneous digital clinical records in accordance with professional and organisational standards.
  • Contribute to service development, audit and quality improvement initiatives.

About You

We are looking for a midwife who:

  • Is a Registered Midwife with current NMC registration.
  • Demonstrates excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Is committed to providing safe, evidence-based and woman-centred care.
  • Works effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Has a flexible and positive approach to service delivery.
  • Holds a full UK driving licence and has access to a vehicle for work purposes.

PRIMARY DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY  


• Care for women throughout the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal period both in the community and the hospital setting

 
COMMUNICATIONS & WORKING RELATIONSHIPS  


• Communicate with people in a form and manner consistent with their level of understanding, culture, background and preferred ways of communicating  
• Communicate relevant information to women and their families in a manner that is consistent with and meets their individual needs  
• Develop and maintain communication with people about complex matters or difficult situations  
• Communicate effectively and professionally with colleagues in a manner that is consistent with relevant legislation, policies and procedures  
• Communicate appropriately with members of the multi-disciplinary team in relation to the care of individual women  
• Keep accurate and complete records of all activities and communication consistent with legislation, policies and procedures  
• Anticipate barriers to effective communication and take action to improve  
• Maintain confidentiality at all times as required by legislation and trust policy  
• Break bad news in an appropriate and empathetic manner  
• Actively try to resolve issues and complaints at local level, or ensure clear and concise advice is given to people on the complaints procedures in place (PALS, names and addresses of the senior team etc)  
• In the event of failing to resolve issues and complaints at a local level, report to the appropriate person  
• Contribute to the cascade of information to team members e.g. attending team Meetings/ Briefings  
• Take a proactive role in seeking out different styles and methods of communication to assist longer term needs and aims  
• Actively involves clients, relatives and carers in their treatment and enables individuals to assist in their own recovery.  
• Acts as an ambassador/role model for the organisation and the midwifery profession.  
• Advocate on behalf of others

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NMC Registered
  • Completed Preceptorship programme or equivalent
  • Proven evidence of Continuing Professional Development
Desirable criteria
  • Proven evidence of continued appropriate studies
  • Mentorship course

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Understands Risk Management and Complaints procedures
  • Up to date with the NHS Agenda, national directives and all Governance aspects
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrable experience of staff development and performance management
  • IT skills

Aptitude & Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Good communication skills, written and verbal, with ability to demonstrate fluency, clarity and effectiveness at all levels
