Job overview
Specialist Nurse within the paediatric Epilepsy Service, providing expert nursing care for children with neurological conditions and epilepsy.
Working across boundaries and with all levels of health professionals and agencies ensure integrated care for children with neurological difficulties influencing care management pathways based on best practice.
The role mainly involves working with the Paediatric Epilepsy service based at the main acute hospital site but will also involve providing some support to the clinical teams and families seen within the community paediatric service.
***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***
Main duties of the job
• In conjunction with the Lead Nurse ensure the continued provision of high-quality care to all children through staff education, governance and professional development.
• To act as an expert in Paediatric Epilepsy, co-ordinating care pathways and developing the service to meet national guidelines and standards.
• To co-ordinate the multi-professional approach in the provision care for children who have Neurological difficulties and epilepsy.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
• Ensuring the efficient and effective provision of care, advice, education and support to children and families in hospital, clinics, their own home or other community settings.
• Assist the Lead Nurse for Community Paediatrics and the Neurology Consultants with future development of the Epilepsy service by identifying service need, evaluating priorities, service analysis.
• Ensure the effective use of resources.
• Undertake project management as agreed with the wider team and line manager.
• Contribute to the co-ordination, collation and analysis of health data regarding children and young people with neurological conditions and epilepsy.
• Responsibility for the line management of staff as appropriate.
• Implement and facilitate the appraisal system in line with the knowledge and skills framework
• Co-ordinate annual leave requests for neurology team staff, making provision for cover in times of absence in accordance with trust guidelines and ensuring that the current service provision is maintained.
• Management of staff sickness within the team and escalating any concerns in line with trust policy.
• Initiate and participate in the recruitment process within HR and recruitment guidelines

Person specification
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- Post registration demonstrable experience in relevant speciality at band 6.
- Able to demonstrate specialist knowledge in relation to assessment and management of epilepsy
- Current and up to date demonstrable experience of nursing patients with neurological conditions / epilepsy / learning difficulties.
Desirable criteria
- Demonstrable counselling experience
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Degree level qualification in relevant field
- 1st Level registered nurse RN (child)
- Safeguarding Supervision training or willingness to undertake
Aptitude and Abilities
Essential criteria
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Able to communicate sensitive information
- Ability to motivate others
Desirable criteria
- Presentation skills
- Proven evidence of change management
