Job overview

Our Senior Healthcare Support Worker will work as part of our nursing team providing personal nursing care and clinical interventions to patients in the inpatient hospital care setting.

 

They may contribute to the assessment of care needs and the delivery of planned care under delegation and direction of the Registered Nurse. This will include recording and documenting physiological observations and changes to the patient’s clinical condition. To practice in accordance of our Trust standards and policies and to work within the boundaries of their role and individual competence.

Main duties of the job

·       Provide direct patient centred care in accordance with patient needs and in line with Trust policies. This may include providing personal care, such as washing and dressing patients, as needed, whilst promoting independence; oral care and supporting with toileting and continence needs

·       Establish and maintain good interpersonal skills. To provide and receive factual and accurate information and to overcome communication barriers using other methods, such as visual prompts, reassurance, empathy, persuasion

Undertake training in order to perform high quality clinical interventions effectively and remain competent to practice these interventions, such as clinical observations, blood glucose monitoring, urinalysis, venepuncture.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Communication and working relationships

  • Communicate effectively across a wide range of channels and with a wide range of individuals, the public and health social and care professionals. They will use both verbal and non-verbal methods of communication, dependent on the needs of the patient and address communication barriers. They should demonstrate the interpersonal skills that demonstrate empathy, compassion, courtesy, respect and trust
  •   Ensure clear, concise, accurate and legible records and all communication is maintained in relation to care delivered, adhering to local and national guidance

  •    Ensure all patient related information is treated sensitively and adhere to the principals of confidentiality at all times

  • Analytical and Judgement

  • Exercise personal responsibility and work independently within defined parameters of practice and their scope of competence, taking the initiative in a variety of situations and performing a range of clinical interventions, consistent with their role, responsibilities and professional values

Planning and organisation 

  •    Responsible for working in an effective and organised manner, prioritising the clinical needs of their patients, demonstrating excellent time management and organisational skills to effectively deliver person centred care

Physical skills

  •      Demonstrate skills of manual dexterity and manipulation of clinical instruments and equipment, in line with appropriate training

  • Demonstrate keyboard skills to support their own learning and entering information into the patient record system

Policy and service

  • Promote health and safety at all times. Share ideas with colleagues to improve care and suggest ideas for innovation. Participate in audit activity undertaken in area of practice. Adhere to legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines, both locally and nationally

Person specification

Qualifications and training

Essential criteria
  • NVQ Level 3 in Health & Social Care or equivalent qualification/experience
Desirable criteria
  • Care Certificate
  • English & Mathematics at GSCE grade A-C (9-4) or level 2 functional skills

Knowledge and experiance

Essential criteria
  • Previous experience in a care environment or able to demonstrate a caring nature/ life experience
  • Understands the need for strict confidentiality
Desirable criteria
  • Working knowledge of complex care needs of some individuals/families including Safeguarding Children & Adults, Domestic Abuse and Mental Health

Specific skills

Essential criteria
  • Basic computer/keyboard skills
  • Fine motor skills – for venepuncture, phlebotomy and other clinical tasks
  • Able to work as a team member or independently
  • To be flexible, adaptable, reliable and punctual
  • Willingness to undertake new skills and training
Desirable criteria
  • Healthcare competencies appropriate to area of work
