Torbay Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is well equipped and staffed by highly knowledgeable, highly skilled, enthusiastic and dedicated individuals. The unit’s quality metrics are of a high standard when benchmarked nationally and the breadth of services provided, together with the estate are impressive. The nursing pain service works is nurse lead service working across chronic and acute pain in a patient centred manner which includes undertaking invasive procedures where appropriate.

- Maintaining and developing systems ensuring a multi-disciplinary approach to patient-centred care delivery, which builds on the philosophy of greater involvement of patients and their relatives/carers.
 - To provide professional nursing/midwifery leadership and accountability for Intensive Care Service, including Critical Care Outreach/Hospital @ Night and the Nursing Pain Service ensuring responsiveness to the changing needs of the service and the impact on the nursing/ multidisciplinary team.
 - With the Critical Care leadership team, lead in the strategic development of Critical Care and Pain Nursing Services, in line with Directorate, Trust and national directives and priorities specifically the current guidelines for the provision of intensive care services.
 - To maintain and develop effective governance arrangements whilst ensuring that patient care is always of the highest possible standard with particular emphasis on dignity and compassion. Working closely with the medical governance lead for critical care and the governance team to ensure a effective and safe service delivery.
 - Be responsible for the professional development and management of the nursing/multidisciplinary team within the critical care and pain nursing services including line management of the pains nurse’s specialist lead nurse, therapies lead, and the band 7 nurses employed by the critical care services.

The unit’s quality metrics are of a high standard when benchmarked nationally, with an enviable breadth of services provided, and a state-of-the-art unit. Taken together, the unit outperforms other units in the SWCCODN when the package of service provision, quality of care, the estate and compliance with national guidance and service specification are considered. The unit is considered to be the ‘Best in the West’.
The team have plans to expand into the 14 bedded critical care unit footprint.
The nurse led critical care outreach service includes hospital at night nursing team. The post holder also provides nursing leadership to the pain nursing team which includes both the chronic and acute services working across the organisation.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- · The Clinical Matron will be accountable for ensuring the highest standard of clinical care is provided within the Planned Care Group. They will be easily identifiable to clients and users and provide strong, visible leadership. They will have the appropriate level of authority to provide the support, advice and assistance required by patients and their families and carers. The key focus of the role will be Patient Safety, Patient Experience, user engagement, quality care and clinical outcomes.
 - The post holder will have clinical and managerial responsibility for a defined clinical portfolio within the Planned Care Group, which will include the Intensive Care Unit. They will also have lead clinical responsibility for supporting the Care Group in activities relating to the delivery of high-quality services, including involvement in maintaining activity levels, managing service pressures & patient flow and maintaining the highest standards of care. They will lead on delegated projects on behalf of the Care Group and will provide support for day-to-day operational issues and deputise as deemed appropriate.

 - The southwest region has a highly functional critical care network, and you will therefore have a key role in developing nursing practice throughout the region, working closely with colleagues in other organisations.As the unit runs a nationally recognised icu rehabilitation service the post holder provides senior leadership and line management to the rehabilitation team which includes physiotherapy and occupational therapy components to provide appropriate patient focused care. The post holder will have completed master’s level study or equivalent in nursing/leadership. If you are an ICU nurse with vision, substantial recent clinical ICU experience at a senior level, and a strong team focus we wish to hear from you. The role is key to providing a patient centred service working with a well-developed team that are highly educated in evidence-based practice. The postholder will be required to provide clinical expertise to the trust leadership team on matters related to the development and progression of the critical care service.
