MATERNITY COVER
We have an exciting opportunity for a Ward Sister/ Charge Nurse to join our team here on New Forrest Ward to support during maternity leave. Here we specialise in Diabetes and Endocrinology mixed with acute general medicine, as well as a sprinkle of those presenting with mental health concerns.
We are looking for a highly motivated and innovative leader who has the ability to work across the 24-hour day, seven days a week. You will be providing day to day leadership to the Nursing team within the ward, acting as a role model at all times whilst ensuring patients are receiving high quality evidence-based care.
You will adopt a highly visible and accessible approach for patients, their carers and relatives, and all staff within the MDT alike. You will lead by example and help to empower staff in their personal and professional development. There is an expectation to work closely with the medical team and other agencies, to ensure patient care is given safely, promptly and appropriately, encouraging proactive discharge planning, and promoting maximum independence for patients.
The post holder will be expected to be innovative with ways of working, and will strive to offer ideas which will develop the service and which best fit the demands made upon the ward environment. You will be encouraged and supported to challenge working practices in order to become as efficient as possible, where you will utilise all learning opportunities and undertake supervision.
Main duties of the job
Act with professionalism and integrity, being a role model to those around us and ensuring everyone has an equal opportunity
Act as an advocate for staff, patients and relatives at all times
Assist the Ward Manager in the management of unit resources- budget, staffing, annual leave etc.
Assist the ward manager in staff management- absences, annual achievement reviews etc.
Initiate and implement duty rotas ensuring adequate skill mix to meet the needs of the clinical area
Be honest and learn from mistakes, and help to create a “no-blame” culture were people feel able to share and learn from experiences together
Assist the ward manager but also develop own knowledge around governance and investigations
Assist the ward manager with interviews and selection of nursing staff as required and build and maintain a skilled, cohesive supportive and effective team
Participate in educating staff and to be an NMC Assessor for student nurses
To work as part of a team demonstrating effective communication, and working collaboratively with colleagues inside and out of the department
Be aware of all hospital policies and procedures and collaborate with other health care professionals to ensure that these are observed
Recognise patients changing condition and seek the appropriate support and advice from senior staff
Work collaboratively with the team to improve the general health and wellbeing of staff and patients

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Develop and promote sustainable relationships between patients, carers,
and health professionals, statutory and voluntary agencies to provide locally accessible services ensuring continuity of care establishing a network that can be used to streamline care pathways through partnership working.
Work within the senior nursing hospital team to provide support for junior members of staff.
Regularly communicates unpleasant news and sensitive information of a
demanding, distressing and highly emotional nature requiring advanced
communication skills, sensitivity and empathy.
Manage time effectively and respond creatively to situations within the
resources available to manage the caseload given.
Attendance at meetings to optimise team working and allow for an effective
and seamless patient journey to improve the patients’ quality of life through high standards of practice.
