Job overview

An opportunity has arisen to join our Surgical Admissions and pre-operative assessment service as a Registered Nurse/ODP on a permanent contract.

Upon joining us, you will become part of a multidisciplinary team committed to delivering high standards of individualised care to those who use our services, while always respecting their privacy and dignity. You will carry out clinical duties to provide the highest quality care to patients on a day-to-day basis. This role involves working within Surgical Admissions and Pre-assessment.

You will need to demonstrate the ability to carry out risk assessments and escalate concerns when they fall outside your scope of practice. This is an exciting time to be part of the pre-operative assessment field, as the role continues to develop nationally. Training modules will be available in collaboration with GIRFT, along with opportunities for professional development.

We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic and motivated, with a proven ability to work effectively as part of a team. You should also be capable of prioritising your workload and working independently, with a strong desire to develop into a competent and confident pre-assessment practitioner.

Main duties of the job

  • To be able to undertake nurse led pre-assessment on patients undergoing elective surgery for all specialities, provide health promotion advice and ensure that written information relating to the surgery is given.
  • Patient is optimised for surgery and risks are identified and action taken. This involves screening of patients ensuring that they are fit for surgery and escalating when necessary 
  • Ensure that effective communication is maintained both within pre-assessment, surgical admissions and with relevant multidisciplinary team. 
  • When working in the Surgical Admissions Unit to help ensure the smooth running of the department and the timely arrival of patients to theatre, liaising with the multi-disciplinary team and other departments on a daily basis following guidelines and protocol 
  • The staff nurse or ODP in POAC is responsible for the pre-operative assessment of adult patients having a planned surgical procedure for their fitness for general anaesthetic and surgery within Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust.
  • You will be responsible for patient-centred assessments which includes liaising with patients, their carers, and the multi-disciplinary team. 

 Training and mentoring will be provided to support you in reaching your goals.
