Job overview
We are offering an excellent opportunity for a RSCN nurse to develop their skills in an ever-changing environment. We need you to be dynamic, motivated team players and possess excellent verbal and written, communication / people skills. The successful candidates will be expected to deliver high quality care to children and adults, with support within the framework of the multi-disciplinary team.
You will be supported by an experienced inter-professional team which includes nurses, doctors and allied health professionals. We work closely with the paediatric areas of the Trust (including CAU, Paediatric Day case theatres and HDU etc.) and Bristol Children’s Hospital.
As a band 5 RSCN nurse in the department you will predominately work in the paediatric and resuscitation areas of the ED but will be expected to work in all areas of the department as required with support as necessary. This is an internal rotation post; shifts include long days (07:30-20:00) Twilights (14:00-02:00) and nights (19:45-08:15), and shifts may change as the service develops. This is an exciting time for the department and a time for us to invest in change in order to deliver a top class service.

Main duties of the job
· ***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***
To provide prompt and efficient treatment of the acutely ill or traumatised patient (both adult & child) and support their relatives.
· To meet the needs of children and adults in respect of minor illness / injury and the provision of health care advice
· To develop skills of leadership and act as a role model for other staff members.
· Contribute to the management of risk, both clinical and financial
· Ensure effective use of resources and the cost implications on practice.
Contribute toward the continuing development of professional nursing practice in the Emergency Department.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Providing and delivering a high standard of nursing care by initiating and co-ordinating the assessment, planning, implementing and evaluating of individual patients needs based on evidence. This includes all aspects of care, for both children and adults, from admission to discharge.
- Reporting and documenting all relevant nursing/patient needs, communicating changes with other health care professionals in the multi-disciplinary team with ongoing responsibility for patient care as they occur.
- Promoting and delivering health education within the clinical area and advice patient, family and others in health promotion issues.
- Engage/interact with carers/family encouraging them to be actively involved in patient’s care, planning as outlined in the department philosophy.
- Demonstrating and undertaking evidence-based practice, playing an active part in the introduction of this evidence to improve patient-centred care.
- Supervising, assessing and mentoring and supporting junior Registered Nurses and Health care professionals, including bank and agency staff in the clinical setting.
- Increasing the level of knowledge and skills within the Department/Directorate through sharing best practice and supporting others to develop their professional abilities.
- Implementing and sharing good infection control practice.
- Undertake manual handling assessments and ensuring actions are met.
- Day to day direct supervision of team of patients and staff

Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria
- • Proven evidence of recent Continuing Professional development.
Desirable criteria
- • Demonstrable Venepuncture / Cannulation skills.
- • Intravenous therapy skills
- • ECG
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- • Proven NMC Registered Nurse.
- • Proven RSCN / Part 15
- • Proven Diploma qualification in a healthcare related subject / or equivalent experience.
Desirable criteria
- • Proven Relevant Degree.
- • Computer literate (ECDL).
- • Relevant post basic leadership course.
Aptitude & Abilities
Essential criteria
- • Good communication skills, written and verbal, with ability to demonstrate fluency, clarity and effectiveness at all levels.
- • Numerate
- • Effective influencing skills: in general and with senior health care professionals.
Desirable criteria
- • Demonstrate potential management abilities.
- • Ability to facilitate change within the work area.
- • Ability to work as team leader.
