Job overview

We are looking for registered nurse with an interest in women's health and cancer to join our team. as a clinical nurse specialist. Applicants will have at least 2 years post registration experience working in an acute setting. Experience in either women's health or cancer speciality is desirable but not essential as training will be given.  A keen interest in the specialty is more important.

The role of the clinical nurse specialist is to provide an expert service for patients in West Dorset diagnosed with gynaecological cancers. The post holder will be based at Dorset County Hospital.

Main duties of the job

Provision of a high-quality nursing service to patients with gynaecological cancers, providing support and continuity from the point of diagnosis/referral, acting as a key worker where appropriate and also a core member of the multidisciplinary team.

Providing psychological support to patients and their families/ carers whilst liaising and referring as necessary to appropriate health care professionals within the hospital and community.

Delivery of personalised care with holistic  assessment of needs and planning and implementation of patient centred care at key points in the cancer journey.

The provision of education, information, support and advice to other health care professionals

The gynae-oncology team spans both gynaecology and oncology services and there is a strong emphasis on team work.

 

 

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Work closely with the gynae-oncology multi-disciplinary team (MDT) within the Trust.  Active involvement in the diagnosis, investigations, treatment, and follow-up of patients with gynaecological malignancy, ensuring continuity of care and improving the quality of life for this patient group.
  • Deputise for the band 7 CNS post holder in their absence.
  • Attendance at weekly MDT meetings and attend clinics to support patients where appropriate but especially where patients are receiving diagnostic information.
  • Undertake holistic assessment of needs and develop patient centred care plans and treatment summaries at key points in the pathway.
  • To work with other cancer CNS’s and support workers to help facilitate generic health and wellbeing programmes and activity.
  • Liaise with staff at tertiary hospitals in relation to patients undergoing investigations or treatment outside of Dorset County Hospital.
  • Demonstrating a fundamental level of specialist knowledge of gynaecological cancer and remaining up-to date with all relevant developments in this area.  
  • To work closely with palliative care teams to ensure a seamless handover of care and where necessary, provide support of patients with gynaecological disease who are approaching the end of life.
  • Demonstrate a high level of communication skills with patients and colleagues.
  • Ability to communicate sensitive information including sharing bad news to patients including those who may have difficulty in understanding it.
  • Provision of psychological assessment and support (level 2)
  • Recognise limitations of knowledge and skills and refer to psychology and counselling services as necessary.

Essential criteria
  • RGN with minimum of 2 years post registration in acute clinical setting.
  • Teaching and assessing qualification
  • Relevant 1st level Health related degree
  • Evidence of CPD
Desirable criteria
  • Qualification in Gynaecological Care Nursing/Cancer Nursing or equivalent.
  • Advanced Communication Skills training
