Job overview
University Hospitals Dorset (UHD) has an exciting opportunity for a Clinical Endoscopist to join our expanding Endoscopy service. UHD is currently building a new 6-bed endoscopy unit at the Poole site. The Bournemouth site hosts a 6-room endoscopy unit, and there is also a satellite endoscopy unit at Wimborne Hospital with one procedure room. The successful candidate will be working cross-site.
The post holder will be an autonomous practitioner, competent in lower gastrointestinal endoscopy, contributing to the effective delivery of endoscopy lists in line with JAG, BSG and Trust standards. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, the role will involve close collaboration with consultant gastroenterologists, colorectal surgeons, nursing staff and the wider endoscopy workforce.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the assessment, consent, performance and reporting of lower GI endoscopic procedures, ensuring safe, evidence-based practice and excellent patient experience throughout the endoscopy pathway. They will participate in audit, service development, training and quality improvement initiatives, and contribute to maintaining JAG accreditation and achieving key performance indicators.
This role offers an excellent opportunity to develop advanced clinical skills, take on leadership responsibilities within the endoscopy unit, and contribute to the ongoing development of a modern, efficient endoscopy service.

Main duties of the job

Independently assess, consent and perform lower gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures in accordance with national guidelines (JAG, BSG, NHSBSP where applicable) and Trust policies.

Provide safe, high-quality diagnostic and surveillance colonoscopy and/or flexible sigmoidoscopy, maintaining performance indicators in line with JAG standards.

Undertake comprehensive pre-procedure assessment, including review of referrals, medical history, anticoagulation and bowel preparation, and make appropriate clinical decisions regarding fitness for procedure.

Accurately document, interpret and report endoscopic findings, including appropriate management plans, histology requests and follow-up arrangements.

Communicate effectively with patients, relatives and the multidisciplinary team, ensuring clear explanation of procedures, findings and post-procedure care.

Manage complications and adverse events within scope of practice, escalating appropriately and participating in incident reporting and learning processes.

Contribute to clinical audit, service evaluation and quality improvement activities to support ongoing service development and maintenance of JAG accreditation.

Support the effective running of the endoscopy service, including flexible working across lists, contributing to waiting-list management and service delivery priorities.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post holder will work as an autonomous Lower Gastrointestinal Clinical Endoscopist, delivering high-quality diagnostic and surveillance endoscopy within the Trust’s Endoscopy Service. They will be responsible for the safe assessment, consent, performance and reporting of lower GI endoscopic procedures, ensuring compliance with JAG standards, Trust policies and national guidelines.
The role requires advanced clinical expertise, sound independent decision-making, and the ability to manage complex clinical scenarios. The post holder will contribute to service development, audit, education, leadership, and quality improvement, supporting the delivery of a safe, efficient and patient-focused endoscopy pathway.
Clinical Practice and Patient Care

Independently assess, consent and perform lower GI endoscopic procedures (e.g., colonoscopy and/or flexible sigmoidoscopy) in line with JAG, BSG and Trust standards.

Deliver safe, effective and patient-centred care across the endoscopy pathway, from referral triage to post-procedure follow-up.

Conduct comprehensive pre-procedure clinical assessment, including evaluation of indications, co-morbidities, anticoagulation/antiplatelet management, bowel preparation, and suitability for sedation.

Interpret endoscopic findings accurately and formulate appropriate management plans, including biopsies, polypectomy within scope of practice, surveillance planning and onward referral.

Provide clear, timely and high-quality procedure reporting, ensuring accurate clinical documentation, coding and communication with referrers and GPs.

Recognise and manage procedure-related complications and medical emergencies, escalating appropriately in line with local protocols.

Ensure effective post-procedure care, including discharge planning, patient advice, safety netting and communication of results.
Autonomous Decision-Making and Advanced Practice

Practice as an independent clinician within agreed scope, demonstrating accountability for clinical decisions and outcomes.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registered health care professional
- Degree level education in related subject or studying towards this
- • JAG Accredited Upper GI and/or Lower GI Endoscopist – demonstrable JAG/NED KPI’s

- Demonstrable evidence of working in a Clinical Endoscopist role
- Evidence of managing a caseload or care group in a clinical setting with multidisciplinary working
- Evidence of having been responsible for day to day supervision or co-ordination of staff in a clinical setting with multidisciplinary working
- Evidence of participation in quality assurance, audit and research
- Evidence of providing written and verbal communications to consultants and GPs as an integral part of caseload responsibilities
