Liaison Nurse

We are one of the largest specialist mental health and learning disabilities trusts in the country, with an annual income of £320m and a workforce of some 6,700 staff operating from around 100 sites in Durham, Teesside, North Yorkshire and York and Selby. We provide a range inpatient and community services to 2m people living in County Durham, the Tees Valley, Scarborough, Whitby, Ryedale, Harrogate, Hambleton and Richmondshire. We also provide additional specialist services to other parts of Northern England.

We deliver our services by working in partnership with eight local authorities and clinical commissioning groups, a wide range of voluntary organisations, as well as service users, their carers and the public. The services are spread over a wide geographical area of around 3,600 square miles, which includes coastal, rural and industrial areas.

Liaison Psychiatry is the medical specialty concerned with the care of people presenting with both mental and physical health symptoms regardless of presumed cause. This speciality employs the bio-psychosocial model, being concerned with the inter-relationship between the physiology, psychology and sociology of human ill health. Liaison psychiatry services are designed to operate away from traditional mental health settings, in the main in general hospital emergency departments and wards, and medical & surgical outpatients.


Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys are looking to recruit a Band 6 Nurse Practitioner to work with York Liaison Mental Health Team based at The York Hospital. This service has recently been expanded in line with the national drive for ‘Core 24’ Liaison services and is expected to continue to develop in the future. The service runs 24/7 throughout the year and the successful candidate will be expected to work shifts to support this. Therefore unsocial hours, including night duty is an expectation of this post.

It presents an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, empathetic and skilled practitioner to join this team and the successful applicant will play a pivotal role in providing mental health assessment, advice,  treatment, care planning, reviewing and appropriate referring on of service users aged 16 years and over who present with mental health issues at York Hospital.

This will be a challenging and rewarding role in which the practitioner will be expected to work autonomously in a dynamic environment, have strong assessment and therapeutic skills and be dependable, approachable and flexible; previous experience and knowledge of working in front line acute services through Crisis and/or Liaison Psychiatry is essential, and experience and knowledge of working in urgent and emergency care pathways is desirable.

The successful candidate will be a Registered Mental Health Nurse or Registered Learning Disability Nurse and preferably have ENB 998 / C&G 730 or equivalent.  Additionally you should have evidence of continual professional learning relevant to the post.

Experience with patients with self harm behaviour, patients in crisis, and patients with dementia and skills in CBT and Brief Solution Focused Therapy would be an advantage.

You will require excellent communication skills and be able to work under pressure.
