Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our paediatric team at Worthing Hospital.  We are looking to appoint a forward thinking and enthusiastic nurse to work in our Children's and Young Person's Day Unit ( CYPDU).  The successful candidate will work alongside the Children's ambulatory care manager to support the paediatric nursing team whilst maintaining responsibility for a safe and effective service.  

We welcome applications from those who currently hold a UK NMC registration. If you currently hold an overseas nursing qualification and require sponsorship we are not currently direct hiring Internationally Qualified Nurses.

Main duties of the job

  • The post holder will be a proficient clinical practitioner who will be able to lead, influence and deliver effective care. They will take charge of CYPDU caring for children and young people with nursing needs. They will have a responsibility for ensuring care is coordinated and resources are used, effectively.
  • Ensuring the highest quality, effective and compassionate patient care is received by the child, young person and their families/ carers whilst on the unit.
  • Excellent, holistic and individualised nursing care will be delivered through assessment, planning, implementing and evaluating.  This will be in line with local, Trust wide and National policies, procedures, values and behaviours. 
  • Promoting a supportive learning environment in which to supervise and mentor student nurses, paediatric Nursery Nurses and Health Care Assistants.
  • The post holder will act as an advocate whilst demonstrating effective communication and listening skills which are age appropriate for the child and young person.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Ensure care is family focused and tailored to the needs of the child or young person.

  • Participate in the assessment, implementation and delivery of individualised patient care seeking guidance where appropriate.
  • To report on the condition of patients to the Clinical Leader/Medical staff, assisting them in ascertaining treatments and ensure these are carried out.
  • To ensure that all patients' data is accurately recorded.
  • Ensure that all patients have nutritional assessment and that individual needs are fully met.
  • Be responsible for the control and custody of all medication and drugs in accordance with Trust policy.
  • To administer drugs as prescribed, checking and witnessing controlled drugs.
  • Ensure safe effective discharge planning, involving the multidisciplinary team as necessary.
  • Take charge of a group of patients, taking into account patient/relative/carers wishes.

Essential criteria
  • NMC registration
  • Experience in managing beds and patient flow
  • Substantial Paediatric Experience
  • EPLS / APLS / PILS trained
  • Teaching and assessing qualification
  • Extensive post-registration
  • Substantial working as senior staff nurse
  • Broad experience in general paediatrics.
  • Experience caring for adolescents.
  • Experience in managing beds and patient flow.
