Interventional Radiology Nurse

Band 6

Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is the only acute hospital provider in the Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System (ICS), which is a system of health and care partners working together for our local population.

Within Mid and South Essex there are 149 GP practices, operating from over 200 sites, forming 27 Primary Care Networks and one Ambulance Trust. There are also three main community and mental health service providers who work together through a community collaborative.

We collaborate with other valuable partners, including three Healthwatch organisations, nine voluntary and community sector organisations and three top tier local authorities, with seven district, borough and city councils, as well as our local universities.

Job overview

You will be a key member of the Interventional Radiology team, using your existing clinical skills to support patients undergoing a wide range of interventional procedures. As part of your development, you will be trained to scrub, circulate and take on the role of patient nurse within our Interventional Radiology Theatre/Suite. You will also rotate into the day case recovery unit, providing high‑quality care to patients both before and after their procedures.

Working in this dynamic and fast‑paced environment, you will draw on your strong communication, time-management and problem‑solving abilities to help ensure safe, smooth and efficient patient care. Your adaptability and commitment to excellence will play an important role in the success of the service and the experience of every patient you support.

Main duties of the job

You will complete all required training and competency assessments to confidently scrub for the full range of interventional radiology procedures, as well as undertake the roles of circulator and patient nurse within the IR theatre. You will also act as the recovery nurse, admitting patients before their procedure and caring for them in the day‑case recovery room afterwards, ensuring they remain safe and well until discharge.

Flexibility is essential, as you will work in line with the evolving needs of the service, including participation in out‑of‑hours work and the on‑call rota. Once fully trained, you will take on additional supervisory responsibilities, supporting the running of the department through activities such as audits and appraisals for junior staff.

As your expertise grows, you will develop advanced clinical skills in Interventional Radiology and engage in relevant postgraduate learning to support both your professional development and the continued enhancement of the service. You will maintain competence in preparing and using the complex equipment required for Interventional Radiology and Endovascular Procedures, and once appropriately trained, you will also contribute to evaluating new equipment and assisting with procurement decisions.

Working for our organisation

Our ambition is to deliver excellent local and specialist services, to improve the health and well being of our patients, and provide a vibrant place for staff to develop, innovate and build careers.

We aim to make the most of our skills and experiences so we can become the best we can be. As one organisation we will recruit the finest and retain more specialist staff due to more employment opportunities across our Trust.
