Specialist Midwife – Diabetes in Pregnancy

Are you an experienced and motivated midwife looking to develop your career in a specialist and rewarding area of maternity care? The Diabetes in Pregnancy Service at Broomfield Hospital is expanding, and we are seeking enthusiastic midwives to join our dedicated multidisciplinary team.

This is an exciting opportunity to specialise in the care of women with diabetes during pregnancy, supporting around 10% of women who give birth at Broomfield Hospital and receive care through our service.

Working alongside obstetricians, diabetologists, specialist nurses and dietitians, you will provide expert care for women with pre-existing diabetes and complex gestational diabetes. Your role will include supporting multidisciplinary antenatal clinics, leading joint midwife-dietitian clinics, and helping women achieve the best possible outcomes for themselves and their babies.

As a specialist practitioner, you will also act as a valuable source of expertise for the wider maternity team, providing education, advice and clinical support, as well as reviewing and supporting women throughout their hospital stay.

Main duties of the job

·         To be a clinical expert in Diabetic midwifery care and provide a comprehensive range of health education, psychological and social care advice to women in a hospital and community setting.

·         To ensure the provision of a safe and high-quality Diabetic midwifery service ensuring continuity of care in keeping with agreed pathways.

·         Ensure all documentation is complete and accurate and that information is stored and maintained appropriately.

·         To promote and facilitate a safe working environment which actively supports learning, innovation and the development of quality care for clients.

·         To be involved the development of the Diabetic service within the maternity department in partnership with the diabetes service.

·         To work in partnership in planning, implementing, and evaluating programmes of care in order to improve the health of individuals, their families and reduce health inequalities.

·         Ensuring women with pre-existing and gestational diabetes receive effective management of their diabetes via staff support and training.

  • Excellent clinical skills
  • Current NMC registration

  • Leadership skills – calm positive style.

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of midwifery issues both strategically and nationally.
  • Experience in working in all aspects of clinical midwifery.
  • Demonstrable experience as a Band 6 midwife.
  • Excellent clinical skills
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in diabetes services
  • Experience in both hospital and community setting.
