Job overview

The post holder will assist support of young  people with mental health needs and challenging  behaviours, such as depression or psychosis, and working with young people who have likely felt or attempted suicidal. You will be required to provide person centred care and working, whilst supporting qualified staff to ensure the highest standards of care are upheld.  

The post holder works under the overall supervision of the Ward Manager, but is required to undertake the duties of the post without direct supervision. They are required to teach other  nursing and non-nursing staff allocated to their particular area.  In addition, the post holder  will be expected to take a key role as lead on the clinical practice within the area, will  demonstrate good leadership skills whilst ensuring robust standards of care are in place,  including physical, mental health and social needs ensuring theses are implemented and evaluated. 

Main duties of the job

  1. The post holder will be responsible for developing and running teaching sessions including CAMHS preceptorship programme, and adhoc trainings as required. 
     The post holder will be fully conversant and uphold the Nursing and Midwifery code of Professional conduct.    
    Acting at all times in accordance with:   
    Midwifery and Nursing Council Code of Professional Practice  
     Scope of Professional Practice  
     Standards for Medicines management  
    Guidelines for Records and Record keeping  
     NMC  
     Inform the Ward Sister/Ward Charge Nurse on all breaches of nursing professional 
    conduct, as required by the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s (NMC) Code of Professional 
    Conduct 
  2. In association with Anglia Ruskin University, University of Essex and University of Suffolk  , ensure the learning environment for all nurses in training is 
    appropriate and that teaching areas comply with all N.M.C. Regulations. 
  3. Take responsibility for the allocation of student nurses and preceptee nurses.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

    3. Inform the Ward Sister/Ward Charge Nurse on all breaches of nursing professional 
    conduct, as required by the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s (NMC) Code of Professional 
    Conduct 
    4. Have a sound knowledge/understanding of the legislation as part of the role of the 
    Registered Mental Health Nurse, including Mental Health Act 1983, Misuse of Drugs Act 
    1971, Access to Information Act 1991, Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and CPA. 
    5. In association with Anglia Ruskin University, University of Essex and Trust Advisory 
    Nursing Group (T.A.N.G.), ensure the learning environment for all nurses in training is 
    appropriate and that teaching areas comply with all N.M.C. Regulations. 
    6. Participate and take professional responsibility/accountability in care planning and ensure 
    that accurate, timely records are maintained in line with the Trust Policy and N.M.C. 
    Record Keeping. 
    7. Ensure that clinical practice is evidence-based wherever possible and participate in 
    research and audit 
    8. Following any complaint / accident of serious incident ensure that appropriate 
    documentation is fully completed in line with Trust Policy and Procedures CP2, CPG2, 
    CP3 CPG3 and forwarded to the ward sister/ ward charge nurse or in their absence the 
    Consultant Practitioner.  
    9. Be responsible for updating own knowledge of contemporary psychiatry and a 
    commitment to continuing own personal and career development, in line with Trust 
    Appraisal and Development Policy and N.M.C. guidelines and requirements with regards 
    to PREP.  
    10. Attend training as provided and be responsible for keeping self up to date at all times with 
    mandatory training.  
    11. Keep updated in all legislative government initiatives 
    12. Act as role model at all times, ensuring uniform is worn correctly 
    13. Undertake and be proactive in clinical and managerial supervision and identify the training 
    needs of junior, unqualified staff and students. 
    14. Participate in the appraisal process every year; ensure all personal objectives are met in 
    a timely manner 
    15. Promote a positive ward image, showing a professional and helpful approach to all visitors 
    to the ward and identify where relationships with the public could be improved, in line with 
    the Trust customer care agenda  
  2. 1. Regularly take charge of the ward 
    2. Liaise with the Clinical Team and other disciplines to ensure appropriate continuity of 
    patient care as part of the Care Programme Approach and improve the quality of care 
    provided 
    3. In liaison with the Senior Sister/Senior Charge Nurse, ensure that Trust Policies and 
    Procedures are communicated, implemented and developed within the area and staff 
    are aware at all times that current information is available via the Trust Intranet.  
    4. Be mindful and uphold all infection control policies and procedures  
    5. Ensure that adequate stock levels of drugs, dressings and are available on the ward.  
    6. Maintain equipment and organize repairs and replacements as necessary.  
    7. Act as role model at all times, able to demonstrate excellent leadership skills.  
    8. Instruct and supervise staff in nursing techniques, identifying training needs and 
    actively participating in staff development programmes 
    9. Undertake and be proactive in clinical supervision in accordance with Trust Polices at 
    regular intervals with the Band 7; discussing the overall nature of the caseload, work 
    methods and techniques and evaluate clinical effectiveness and practice. 

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse (NMC Registered).
  • Evidence of continuing professional development (CPD)
  • Teaching and assessing qualification or willingness to undertake.
Desirable criteria
  • Practice Assessor/Supervisor qualification.
  • Postgraduate qualification in education, leadership, or a related field.
  • Quality improvement qualification.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience supporting staff development and education in practice.
  • Experience mentoring, supervising, or precepting staff and students.
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience in a Practice Development Nurse role.
  • Experience developing and delivering competency frameworks
  • Experience of working with young people in a mental health setting

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of NMC Code and professional standards.
  • Knowledge of current NHS policies and workforce development initiatives.
  • Excellent knowledge of the Mental Health Act
  • Ability to facilitate training and educational sessions.
  • Ability to analyse training needs and develop learning programmes.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience acting as a role model for professional standards and behaviours.
  • Demonstrates leadership within clinical practice.
