Senior Chief Physiologist

Band 8a

Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is the only acute hospital provider in the Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System (ICS), which is a system of health and care partners working together for our local population.

Within Mid and South Essex there are 149 GP practices, operating from over 200 sites, forming 27 Primary Care Networks and one Ambulance Trust. There are also three main community and mental health service providers who work together through a community collaborative.

We collaborate with other valuable partners, including three Healthwatch organisations, nine voluntary and community sector organisations and three top tier local authorities, with seven district, borough and city councils, as well as our local universities.

Job overview

We are pleased to offer an excellent opportunity for a progressive and experienced Chief Physiologist to further develop leadership and service‑management skills.

Following an internal promotion, we are seeking a motivated individual to oversee all aspects of our busy secondary‑care echocardiography service. This includes routine outpatient transthoracic echocardiography, inpatient ward‑based scans, specialist echo, SDEC and CDC activity.

Alongside operational management, you will support the Principal Physiologist with key staff management responsibilities, including sickness and absence processes, appraisals and supporting staff development.

We are actively working towards departmental BSE accreditation, and a core expectation is that the successful candidate will lead and drive this programme to completion.

This role offers an excellent opportunity for someone with strong clinical expertise, a passion for service improvement and the ambition to step into a wider leadership position.

If you are ready for the next step in your career, we would be delighted to receive your application.

Main duties of the job

As a Senior Cardiac Physiologist (Echocardiography), you will:

Manage a busy secondary care echocardiography service and participate in the clinical rota across all echo areas.

Support the Principal Physiologist with day‑to‑day departmental operations, including staff rotas.

Lead and line‑manage all areas of the Non‑Invasive Cardiology service, ensuring effective organisation of staff and resources.

Perform a broad range of highly complex clinical physiology procedures, using advanced skills and specialist cardiology knowledge.

Interpret results, produce accurate clinical reports, and provide expert advice in routine and emergency situations.

Act as the main point of reference for technical queries and issues.

Train and mentor staff across all areas of the department and act as a work‑based assessor for Clinical Physiology students.

Undertake cardiology testing in community settings and domiciliary visits where required.

Contribute to business plans, capital bids, and service development.

Review and update departmental policies and procedures regularly.

Work with other cardiology disciplines to review practice and develop new clinical initiatives.

Ensure full compliance with Trust policies, procedures, and governance standards.

Working for our organisation

Our ambition is to deliver excellent local and specialist services, to improve the health and well-being of our patients, and provide a vibrant place for staff to develop, innovate and build careers.

We aim to make the most of our skills and experiences so we can become the best we can be. As one organisation we will recruit the finest and retain more specialist staff due to more employment opportunities across our Trust.
