Job overview

Maternity Support Workers in our Central Delivery Suite play a key role in supporting birthing individuals and their families throughout their intrapartum journey.

Working closely within a multidisciplinary team of Midwives, Maternity Support Workers, Obstetricians, Anaesthetists and theatre colleagues, you will contribute to the delivery of high-quality care across Central Delivery Suite.

This is a dynamic and varied role, which includes responsibilities such as phlebotomy (taking blood samples), among other clinical support tasks.

The position is based in an inpatient setting, on central delivery suite based at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital.

Main duties of the job

1.    Taking blood samples from adults once trained in phlebotomy

2.    Collection and testing of urine

3.    Taking observations including temperature, pulse rate and blood pressure.

4.    Undertaking blood weighing 

5.    Recording your actions accurately in relevant IT systems and on paper

6.    Liaising with the multi-disciplinary team

7.    Escalating concerns to the Midwife

8.    Cleaning and stocking the department

9.    Answering the telephone and responding to queries

Working for our organisation

We are a welcoming team of Midwives and Maternity Support workers who work closely together, providing intrapartum care to birthing people and their families.

We are one part of Maternity Services in Gloucestershire and work closely with our colleagues in the Community and those on the Birth Units, Triage, Maternity Ward and Antenatal Clinic.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Educated to GCSE grade C or above (or equivalent) in literacy and numeracy
Desirable criteria
  • A Level 3 qualification in maternity support (this could be an NVQ, BTEC or equivalent international qualification), or willingness to undertake this qualification

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Good written and verbal communication skills with a good command and understanding of English, punctuation and grammar
  • Good interpersonal skills for dealing with people internal and external to the organisation
  • Ability to work flexibly within a team
  • An excellent professional manner to minimise conflict, resolve queries and maintain the reputation of the organisation when dealing with members of the multi-disciplinary team and members of the public
  • Ability to read notes, extract data and document accurately on the relevant systems

Clinical / Experience

Essential criteria
  • Ability to take blood samples, after appropriate training, if required
Desirable criteria
  • Appropriate experience in a hospital environment
  • Experience of Trust IT systems

  • Flexible and able to react to changes and methods of working
  • Ability to use initiative and sound judgement when providing patient care
  • Ability to handle occasional distressing circumstances and assist with providing bereavement care to women and their families
